INF5761/INF9761 Health Management Information Systems

Information Systems + Public Health = HMIS

Health (management) Information Systems (HIS) “produce relevant information that health system stakeholders can use for making transparent and evidence-based decisions for health system interventions” Health Metrics Network. “Framework and Standards for Country Health Information Systems (2nd Ed.).” Geneva, Switzerland: World Health Organization, 2008.

Example use of Health Management Information System Routine collection and use of information to make decisions regarding the effective and efficient allocation of resources

Global Health Information: an Example The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is the ratio of the number of maternal deaths during a given time period per 100,000 live births during the same time-period. Sustainable Development Goal 3.1: “By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births” World Bank statistics on Maternal Mortality Ratio

Some practicalities with this course It’s in a seminar format! The lectures are held in different rooms all the time! Too much to read in too little time! Course readings are on the course web. Help each other (in groups)! Discuss ideas in the literature! Ask (silly) questions!

Course Schedule & Curriculum All reading material as PDFs on the course web Lecture slides also available from the course web
