An Introduction to the IoT and why it matters. Ben May There’s big data and then there’s REALLY BIG data An Introduction to the IoT and why it matters. Ben May

A manufacturer. My compnay manufactures jigs and fixtures using industrial grade 3D printing for use in RF testing of comms devices. The parts I make are in current use by virtually every major mobile phone manufacturer

I help product start-ups to manage and mitigate risk out of the New Product Development process. Loppwheels Many are tech start-ups which sit at the convergence of data gathering and intelligent user interaction. Kinetix

“a global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on existing and evolving interoperable information and communication technologies” Internet of Things Global Standards Initiative So What is the Internet of things? Here’s an accurate but unreadable definition from the IoT Global standards Initiative. For many people the popular example is the intelligent fridge that tells you when you’ve run out of beer.

For others a commercially visible example is Hive and other intelligent house systems that allow you to monitor and control your home remotely. These examples are fine but fail to reflect the reality that

It is predicted that there will be 25 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020. - Cisco

It is predicted that there will be 25 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020. - Cisco The majority of communications made by these devices (trillions!) will be to other devices. A tiny percentage will involve human interaction.

Eeeek! It’s the rise of the machines!

Bridge example. Occasionally interrogated. So my simple definition of the IoT is ….

First there were things The demand for things and the ability to mass produce things drove the Industrial revolution

First there were things Then there were bytes The rise of the internet, ever cheaper computing power and cheap and powerful software has fundamentally redefined the ways in which all of us live and work. For the most part our interactions have been through screens and keyboards. We’ve been given information but it has been down to us to apply the knowledge to the real world

First there were things Then there were bytes Now the bytes are connecting the things The development of ultra cheap sensors coupled with neural networks that can learn patterns and become predictive lies at the heart of the rise of the IoT. Sensors that can sense virtually any change in state whether it’s vision, temperature, smell, position, motion. Interaction options have been decoupled from the computer screen. Example - Kinetix. So why is this anything more than peripherally important to most of us?

The intenet and the bytes revolution have democratised business. Oft hyped cases of billion dollar businesses set up by under-graduates in their dorms. For mere mortals the reality is that this revolution has enabled us to punch above our weight for a while now. We can all have a website that is as slick as a massive corporates We have low cost accountancy and business manangement packages that reduce time spent on non-profit making activities. We can all engage in affordable e-commerce. We have sophisticated communication tools including video-conferencing allowing all of us to play on a global scale. We have amazingly powerful market anaylsis and marketing tools available to us.
