Summer Scholars Promise to Practice Program Expectations to Measure Student Progress SPARC – Summer Program Academic Review Committee Mrs. Warren, EOF Director

Without Students, the Summer Scholars Program would not exist. Purpose To dispel the myth of getting kicked out of the program One failure, doesn’t define your entire academic career During the summer program: F is for foundation, not failure Explain SPARC Understand Expectations Highlights For EOF – The Summer 2017 Cohort has the Highest Academic Profile for EOF to date: 76 students accepted/deposited out of (2000 + Applicants) Supportive Think Tank- EOF Faculty, Staff,& Student Staff, & Res. Hall Staff Without Students, the Summer Scholars Program would not exist.

SPARC Timeline The SPARC Team is a collaborative decision making think tank comprised of faculty, staff, tutors, & housing staff. The SPARC Team is tasked with evaluating the overall student performance based on the (3) Success Indicators. Mid-program assessment/SPARC Recommendations submitted (July 19th) Students and Parents/Guardians Notified via email and EOF Dir. (July 20th) Student SPARC Meeting/Action Plan with EOF Dir., EOF Program Specialist, Dr. Gazely, & Cohort Liaison (Dr. Nayak or Chan, or Mrs. Cruz): (July 24th ) Follow-up Student Meeting: (Aug. 3rd) Final Assessment will be completed no later than Aug. 4th. Results will be in writing to student and parent/guardian.

Summer 2016 Outcomes – 83 Students 92.77% Good Academic Standing 77students NOT SPARC’D 7.23% Academic At-Risk 6 students SPARC’D 83% or 5 Out Of 6 SPARC’D Improved 17% or 1 SPARC’D Student Dismissed To Avoid Dismissal, Show Improvement

Tutoring: Ask more questions during your tutoring session but be specific in the types of questions you ask. Continue to work with your tutors. For each tutoring session until end of summer program. 2. Develop learning goals and create own study guide based on Chapter 3 Lab experiment and techniques. Develop detailed study guide to include information beyond definitions to highlight key ideas and concepts and describe existing relationships between key ideas. Increase class engagement by asking questions and participating in class discussion. Provide example of detailed study guide at next SPARC meeting. Professor Hirsch will provide an update, no later than August 5th, regarding level of preparation, effort, and academic outcomes. 3. Review resources: Notetaking strategies Time management-weekend schedule Develop time grid for the weekend of 7/30-31 and provide evidence in next meeting

Attempt problems before you attend tutoring and go prepared to address areas that you do not understand. Ask questions and develop your notes to include diagrams, flashcards and other methods. Needs uninterrupted study time (no headphones and/or distractions)-self-report Continue to work with your tutors. For each tutoring session until end of summer program. 2. Schedule a meeting with Professor Guarracino no later than Wednesday, August 3rd to identify key strategies in preparation for the final exam. Increase class engagement by asking questions and participating in class discussion. Professor Danielle Guarracino Dr. Guarracino will provide an update on student’s level of preparation, effort, and academic outcomes no later than August 5th 3. Review resources: Foundations of success study habit strategies (Week 1 powerpoint) Implement at least 1 Foundations of Success strategy and provide evidence of that strategy in next meeting.

Improves your critical thinking skills through sharing and connecting topics, ideas and assignments between classes Supports in-class learning Increases sense of community
