PubMed/Filters (Basic Course: Module 5)

Table of Contents Filters by publication date Filters by language Filters by age Filters by type of article Filters by text options Search field tags Filters by affiliation Filters by journal Filters by author This module continues the mastering of the skills necessary to utilize the PubMed database as means to identify e-journals within HINARI. It will emphasize the use of limits while searching in PubMed. Again, this will build on searching skills you have learned in previous modules. Similarly to the other modules, you will need access to the Internet and be required to complete a series of exercises. You must login to HINARI and then go to ‘Search inside HINARI full-text using PubMed’ or you will not have access to the full-text articles

Before logging into the Partner Publisher services websites, we will Login to the HINARI site using the URL http://www.who.int/hinari/

We will need to enter our HINARI User Name and Password in the appropriate boxes, then click on the Login button. To have access to the full text articles, you must properly sign in. Since the migration to a new authentication server (Jan. 2014), we strongly recommend use of Chrome or Mozilla. If you use Internet Explorer, you will need to login twice.

If you are using Internet Explorer, repeat the Login process on this 2nd page and you will be redirected to the HINARI Contents page.

Once you are logged in to the HINARI Content page, access PubMed by clicking on Search inside HINARI full-text using PubMed.

PubMed Filters We will examine the numerous Filters options – which enable you to refine (or expand) a search as precisely or broadly as you would like. From the initial (HINARI) PubMed page, we will run the HIV and pregnancy search and then apply various Filters. 7

After completion of a search, the default Filters are displayed in a left-column frame. We will apply different Filters to the results of the HIV and pregnancy search - a total of 14628 citations. In many cases, you will need to click on More – to add other filter options than the ones from the default listing.

Initially we will apply the Publication dates filter Initially we will apply the Publication dates filter. We have clicked on the 5 years option. This limits the search results to 3549. Note the check mark next to Publication Dates section. Also note clear icon. There is a Clear all option at the bottom of the page. If you do not clear your options, they will be applied to future searches. Remember – clear the filters if you DO NOT want them on any subsequent searches. If you do not clear your filters, future search could be significantly more limited.

In the Specify Custom Date Range filter, we have entered the first date of 2014 range to date (2014/01/01 to blank) and clicked on the Apply icon.

By using a 2014 01 01 Specify Custom Date Range filter, we have 286 citations for HIV AND pregnancy search. Below the results, there is the Filters activated line that includes the Clear all option. The specific Filters Activated is noted with a check mark. We will click on the Clear option to remove this . You also can click on the specific filter.

We have cleared all the Filters and the results of the HIV and pregnancy search are the initial number of 14628 citations.

We have clicked on the Show additional filters link and now will check the Languages box and click on Show.

Displayed is the drop down menu for Languages filters Displayed is the drop down menu for Languages filters. Note that English is the default language and more than one can be checked. To add filters to the left-column list (and be able to apply them to a search), you will need to check the boxes and click on the show button. This is necessary for many of the filter options.

We now will investigate the Article types filters We now will investigate the Article types filters. The default types are displayed. By clicking on more…, you can display other options. Remember, by clicking on More, you can view and add the options you want, in this case more Article types sub-categories.

We have clicked on the more… option for Article types and opened the drop down menu. We will add Review and Practice Guidelines article types and click on Show. As previously noted, checking specific boxes and the show button results in the sub-filters adds the filters you want included with the broader term – in this case Article types.

In the Article types, we have clicked on the Practice Guidelines and Review options. The results of the HIV and pregnancy search are 2348 citations. Remember to clear these filters.

We have clicked on Show additional filters and the drop down menu has been displayed. We will add the Ages option by checking the box and clicking on Show. This is a two step process. First, click on Show addtional filters (to display Ages) and, within the Ages filters, to choose the options you would like to use.

By clicking on more… in the Ages filters, all the options are displayed. For the HIV and pregnancy search, we will check the Adolescent: 13-18 years and Young Adult:19-24 years boxes and click on Show. Once displayed, we will click on the new Ages filters.

The two Ages filters are checked and highlighted and HIV and pregnancy search is reduced to 3681 citations. Below the results, there is the Filters activated line that includes the Clear all option. Again – remember to clear the filters or they will remain on for subsequent searches.

We will view one final additional set of filters by clicking the Search fields box and Show.

A new drop down menu is displayed A new drop down menu is displayed. We will highlight the Affiliation option and click on Apply. After this filter is activated, we will type WHO in the PubMed search box and click on Search. For all the Fields filters, you will need to put a keyword search in the PubMed search box and click on Search. For this Affiliation search, we have added WHO, the acronym for the World Health Organization. Similarly, you can check Journals and type a journal title into the Search box or check the Author option and enter the name of an author in the Search box.

The results of the WHO affiliation search are 7571 citations The results of the WHO affiliation search are 7571 citations. In the Abstract display option, we have clicked on the Author information link. Note the World Health Organization affiliation of the authors.

We now will activate the journal Search field filter, enter emerging infectious diseases in the PubMed search box and click on Apply. This is a useful tool for identifying material from one journal. In this case, we have listed all the articles from Emerging Infectious Diseases, an open access e-journal from the Centers for Disease Control (USA). These options are discussed in the following slides.

The results of the emerging infectious diseases journal affiliation search are 6630 citations. This search lists the total number of articles from this journal in PubMed. Remember to clear this Journal search field filter.

We now will activate the Author Search field filter, enter ribeiro in the PubMed search box and click on Apply.

The results of the ribeiro author search are 11063 citations The results of the ribeiro author search are 11063 citations. This search lists the total number of articles by all authors named ribeiro in PubMed.

To further filter this search, add the author’s initial(s) To further filter this search, add the author’s initial(s). The results of the Ribeiro e author search are 484 citations.

The original HIV and pregnancy search has been displayed The original HIV and pregnancy search has been displayed. We will discuss the Text availability filters.

In this example the Free full text available filter has been activated In this example the Free full text available filter has been activated. The search results are 3578 citations. This lower number includes 2077 HINARI citations but these are HINARI/Free Full Text articles only. Therefore, we recommend not using these filters.

Reminder: While working with Filters, you probably noticed the line that Text availability Filter that has the Abstract, Free full text, Full text available options. By clicking on these options, you would filter your search to include all articles with abstracts or full text articles or those articles that are available as free full text by various publishers or those citations that have abstracts. Note: if you click only on Free full text and NOT Full text, your HINARI tab will be limited to only articles that are both free full text and HINARI – a significantly less #.

This is the end of the HINARI Basic Course Module 5 There is a workbook to accompany this part of the module. It will take you through a live session covering the topics included in this module. Updated 2015 04
