How to Moodle 1

Welcome! Introduction… What is Moodle Why is Moodle beneficial for RLSSQ and RLSSQ’s trainers Courses that have been created by RLSSQ to include online learning Learning types Moodle features Trainer access

What is Moodle? Moodle is a Learning Management system (LMS) that can be used for the creation and participation of online learning content When a student completes a course online, Moodle stores each students grades and provides a course completion report for all students in a particular class Each class is set up to a assigned trainer and that trainer can access their groups grades, an individuals quiz attempts and the trainer can monitor a students progress. Note: A trainer may only access their assigned group and is unable to access another trainers group for data protection purposes

The benefits to RLSSQ The use of online learning is a great benefit to the environment, it cuts down the amount of paper used on a daily basis. All trainers know that we spend as large majority of time on the course and after a course marking paperwork. Moodle takes the hassle out of manual marking. Each quiz is set as a 90% pass mark, and each question within the quiz is marked by the system and then when the entire quiz is submitted it automatically marks the students grades to provide a completed percentage. Moodle has a great feature which is a course completion report. This shows a snapshot of all students in the trainers group and what quizzes has been completed. This feature is particularly good as it ensures a trainer knows who has/has not completed their Formative course learning

Courses created by RLSSQ RLSSQ has created online learning for the following courses: Resuscitation First Aid Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting Bronze Medallion Pool Lifeguard Oxygen Resuscitation

Formative & Summative Learning Formative Learning is when a student completes pre-course. Pre-course learning must be fully completed by a student prior to attending a face to face course. Previously, pre-course learning was also known as when a student completed their “Learner Activity workbooks” Summative Learning is when a student completes a series of questions during the face to face course. These questions have been created based on scenarios. A student must complete these questions under the supervision of their course trainer The Formative and Summative learning can be completed online or can be completed using the paper based method We understand that there may be times when a student cannot complete online learning due to computer issues, internet issues etc however RLSSQ encourage trainers to promote the use of the online learning when possible

Moodle Features Royal Life Saving Society Qld has implemented online courses that has been mapped to the Units of Competency Each course consists of sections that include a range of quizzes and resources for Formative and Summative Assessments

Moodle Features A quiz is where a group of questions have been created. Each quiz will contain specific questions relevant to the module/chapter of the course content A resource can be a downloadable PDF document, a downloadable e-book, a YouTube video link, a PowerPoint presentation etc. The resources are used to answer the assessment questions within each quiz The example below shows a total of two resources and three quizzes

Moodle Features The example below shows the sections within a CPR course Each tab can be expanded using the arrow highlighted to show the items within each section

Moodle Features There are two features that have not been explained yet…

Moodle Features The Formative Assessment Completion Certificate is downloadable by a student when they complete and pass all of there Formative Assessment questions. This certificate can be presented to the trainer by a student on the face to face course day. It shows the trainer that all items have been completed by a student. Although a trainer will be able to access the students course completion report prior to the face to face course, we have found that it does actually encourage a student to complete their assessments as they know they are being tracked.

Moodle Features The Trainers Assessment Reporting section is used by trainers to mark their students practical assessments. If the students within the course completes the Summative Assessments online, this reporting section must be used by the trainer following the course. The trainer will open up the reporting tool. And click yes or no for each students assessment item. *More information will be provided on this within the Trainer Access information slides.

Trainer Access

Trainer Access STEP 1 Course Completion Report Using the webpage rlssqonline.com.au sign in to your account On the home page, click on courses and select the course that your class is linked to Within “Administration” on the right hand side of the page select “Reports” and click on “Course Completion” From here, you will be able to select your group from the groups drop down box (please be reminded that you will only be able to see your own groups) Each student within the group will have a tick in the specific boxes that indicates that section has been completed. It there is no visible tick, it shows that the student has not completed that section. A video has been added to YouTube to show you the above steps. Click the link below to access the video https://youtu.be/-fFsMQhPqhY

Trainer Access STEP 2 Grade Analysis Following on from the course completion report, you can open the Gradebook for each of your classes within Moodle to obtain a more detailed report for each student. This report will show the percentage for each quiz attempted by the students. You can also use the magnifying glass to open the actual quiz that the student attempted and this will show the following information: What answer the student provided What answers the student got wrong How many attempts the student used at each question Use the link below to see how to access this report https://youtu.be/lhowpm24VFw

Trainer Access STEP 3 Trainer Assessment Report As previously mentioned in the Moodle Features section, the trainer will need to submit a Trainer Assessment Report to RLSSQ following the face to face course. Each Assessment item will have a yes/no option. Yes = Competent and No = NYC

Trainer Access & Features When the checklist has been submitted by the trainer. Green will highlight as Competent and red will highlight as Not Yet Competent RLSSQ will open the progress bar as above to quickly access the assessment items that has been signed off by the trainer before issuing a certificate to the student. Please click the link below that will show you how to submit this report https://youtu.be/zPFoOuPNbBI

Student grades adjustments Trainer Access Student grades adjustments As we know, each quiz requires a grade of 90% or more for the student to pass and a tick within the course completion report will show if a student has completed and passed that section. But what if a student hasn’t quite achieved the passing grade required? This can be due to a number of reasons. The student has got the questions incorrect or has not identified all of the answers where more than one answer is required The student has made spelling errors As a trainer, you are required to mentor that student to help them achieve the required grade. If you believe that a students grade for a particular question can be adjusted, then you as a trainer can manually mark the question. Manually marking is only recommended if a student can verbally provide the trainer with the correct answer or if there are spelling mistakes A video has been made in the link below to show you how this can be done (Note: Student in this video did receive a pass grade, however video is just made to show how the manual marking is completed) https://youtu.be/71emoIhYaPI

Extra attempts adjustments Trainer Access Extra attempts adjustments NOTE: RLSSQ recommend that if a student has got more than 3 questions wrong within a section, they should attempt the entire quiz again. A student receives 3 attempts at each quiz. If a student requires an extra attempt at a quiz, a trainer can open the quiz up for the student to have another attempt. The trainer should ensure the student is ready to have another attempt, the trainer should mentor the student and provide feedback on the questions that the student got wrong before they reattempt the quiz. Adding an extra attempt for a student is called a user over ride. A video has been made to show you how to do this. Please ensure you follow the video carefully as information needs to be input and also removed to add an extra attempt successfully. Please see the next slide for extra information and the link for the video.

Extra attempts adjustments Trainer Access Extra attempts adjustments Note: The trainer must first view the grade book to review what quiz the student needs an extra attempt for. Click into the quiz using the grade analysis magnifying glass Scroll to find “User Override" on the right hand side of the page under quiz administration Type in the students name and select the name when it appears Ensure the password is removed Ensure quiz open and quiz close dates are not enabled Chose the extra attempt option (note the user already has 3 attempts, so if this is the first override for an extra attempt, the fourth attempt should be selected) if a student needs another attempt after a fouth attempt has been applied, the end of the video will show how this is done by using the settings tool beside the students name in user override. Please click the link below for the video

Question Time Please visit the How to Moodle quiz questions to answer questions in relation to this PowerPoint The pass mark for this quiz is 100% and 3 attempts are allowed Please contact RLSSQ if you have any questions THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!
