Compass School – 23rd January 2017 Emma Collins ONLINE SAFETY Compass School – 23rd January 2017 Emma Collins

What is the session about? Giving you advice and guidance on online activity Explaining different types of social media Giving you a way of reporting concerns Explaining what we’re doing at Compass to keep your children safe Giving you information to take away to refer to at home

What is compass school doing to keep your children safe? All staff are educated about e-safety on a regular basis Your children receive e-safety education once a half-term to ensure that the latest information is provided to them

What is compass school doing to keep your children safe? All staff sign e-safety and social media policies and adhere to strict guidelines on their own online activity including the following: NOT friends with any students NOT disclosing anything to do with Compass school on their own social media pages NOT able to access social media using school computers NOT allowing students to use staff computer logons under any circumstances

Are you concerned about your child’s use of social media? Why? Is it because…. You don’t know who they’re talking to? You don’t know what they are posting? You don’t know what their profile looks like? You’re worried about whether they have the appropriate privacy settings? You don’t know enough about the types of social media

Are you concerned about what they’re doing? Do your children use any of the following? Ipad Mobile phone Ps3/4 Xbox Tablet Ipod Laptop Online games Are you concerned about what they’re doing?

Social media – so many…… So many different types, different uses Do you know which your children are using? Are you worried about their use of social media? Have you heard of sexting? Do you know what it is? Statistics about sexting

Social media – account use So many different types, different uses Do you know which your children are using? Are you worried about their use of social media? Have you heard of sexting? Do you know what it is? Statistics about sexting

Social media – statistics

Sexting – what do you know? What is it? Who does it? The effect it can have? The frequency of it?

prevent – what do you know? At Compass we also educate all pupils on: What radicalisation is Who might be affected How they might be affected How they can report concerns WHY? Online activity is becoming more and more prevalent as a way of reaching children

Parent’s checklist Things to look out for or think about…. Parental controls for: Broadband Online gaming Film, music and tv Search engines Apps and privacy Away from home Refer to guidance on major websites or contact your service provider – they all offer different features

What can you do? Parental controls Look up information about individual social networking sites Know how to report concerns Subscribe to newsletters from companies who specialise in keeping children safe, e.g. NSPCC, Net aware, Thinkuknow to keep you up-to-date Contact Compass School and ask for Emma Collins – I can help you find the information you’re looking for

How to report concerns Tell your child’s class teacher/tutor/safe worker at school Go onto one of the websites and click on the ‘report abuse’ links or contact one of the parent support lines

Useful websites There are a huge number of websites that you can go to for extra help, these are just a few of them: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents www.nspcc.org.uk www.barnados.co.uk www.childnet.com/onlinesafety www.saferinternet.org.uk www.kidsmart.co.uk www.net-aware.org.uk

Key advice IF YOU WOULDN’T DO IT FACE-TO- FACE, DON’T DO IT ONLINE THINK: Is it: True-Helpful-Inspiring- Necessary-Kind? Everything online is captured FOREVER, even if you delete it information can still be accessed Employers regularly check an applicant’s social media presence

Key advice Be vigilant and monitor what you can Talk to your children regularly and start young! Imagine a responsible adult standing behind them – would they still post it? If you don’t understand something yourself, try and learn about it
