Development in India The real way forward for effective change.. Nikita Mehta & Mariam Tayeb

What is development? “The realization of the potential of human and natural resources for the optimal benefit of all.” International devt seeks to provide the worlds poor with essential goods and services aiming ultimately to ‘develop’ the world into a more fair and prosperous place.

China or India? Competition to the pace at which each nation is developing at a faster rate Chinese economy is 4 times bigger but India’s growth rate could over take China by 2013 if not before with growth rates of 8.5% per annum Optimism of India's youth Vs China’s future ageing population

Key measures (i) Increase in real GNP. $3.34 Trillion (ii) Increase in real per capita income. $1.16 Trillion (iii) Gini co efficient. (Lorenz curve) (iv) Basic needs approach. (v) Human Development index. –Between 1980 and 2007 India's HDI rose by 1.33% annually from 0.427 to 0.612 today

The main problems India currently faces Local problems: caste system, gender and inequality, education, health care. National level: poor infrastructure, political corruption and lack of FDI due to lack of public expenditure. The national level interferes with international help, as it doesn’t allow it to reach its full potential due to the nations problems holding it back. All these problems have a domino effect, which trickles down the economy and has it greatest effect on the poor.

Our solutions Branches & Flowers: International Trunk: National The Tree of Life Our solutions Branches & Flowers: International Trunk: National Roots: Local

Local Priority to tackle the roots of the problem instead of focusing on short term aid Change comes from ones desire to develop and individual empowerment but society’s tradition does not give freedom Education is the key to liberation and critical for economic development

National Non corrupt governments More public expenditure on infrastructure especially roads and schools Health clinics widely accessible

International Enough FDI at present and global interest but cannot reach its full potential if the national issues are not addressed soon

Conclusion India: an emerging giant economy and the sooner India acts on its problems starting with its basic problems, the sooner we will be able to mobilize to collectively alleviate poverty. IN NAT LOCAL
