In-Text Citations – Oh, joy! This skill is on the final exam! You MUST do this correctly.

Four different ways to integrate quotations into your writing: #1 Introduce the quotation with a complete sentence and a colon. Thoreau ends his essay with a metaphor: “Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in” (81).

#2 Use an introductory phrase (that’s NOT a complete sentence) and separate it from the quotation with a comma. According to Thoreau, "We do not ride on the railroad; it rides upon us“ (101).

#3 Make the quotation a part of your own sentence without any punctuation between your own words and the words you are quoting. Thoreau argues that "shams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths, while reality is fabulous” (99). According to Thoreau, people are too often "thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquito's wing that falls on the rails“ (101).

The Chocolate Chip Method #4 Use short quotations--only a few words--as part of your own sentence. Thoreau argues that people blindly accept "shams and delusions" as the "soundest truths," while regarding reality as "fabulous” (99).

The Rules Now that you’ve seen four different ways to incorporate quotations into your sentences, we need to talk about correct MLA in-text citation format.

The Rules: Embed the quote into a sentence for fewer than four typed lines of prose. According to the article, “Cats are the number one pet for a single person living in an apartment” (Mullen 6). Kate Mullen emphasized, “Cats are the number one pet for a single person living in an apartment” (6). *The author received credit in the sentence, so it doesn’t need to be repeated in the parentheses. For long quotation format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/03/

The Rules for Poetry (for fewer than three lines of poetry) Cullen concludes, “Of all the things that happened there/ That’s all I remember” (11-12). Separate lines of poetry with a forward slash. For long quotation format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/03/ )

The Rules: The parenthetical citation goes at the end of the sentence. The period always goes at the very end of the sentence! …” (Mullen 6). Inside the parentheses: Author or editor’s last name. Page number or line number **You only need to cite page/line number once it is clear who the author is.

The Rules One more thing… When the quotation itself ends in a question mark or an exclamation point, you still need a period at the end of the sentence. ....?” (Smith 100). ...!” (Smith 100).

The Rules Continued: The comma rule simplified: If the quote fits into the natural construction of a sentence, you do NOT need a comma. Ex: It was only a matter of time before “his last breath weakly streamed forth” (974). Notice The first letter of this quote is not capitalized because it is not the beginning of a sentence. If you use an introduction phrase, you MUST use a comma. Most common phrases end with a verb/synonym for “says”: Ex: Ms. Mullen writes, “Don’t forget about the cats!” (1). Ex: Then, Gregor thought, “Maybe they’ll allow me to turn around now” (974).

In-Text Citation Practice: You found this quote about Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (by Jane Austen) on page 78: The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance, and being unworthy to be compared with his friend. Embed this or part of this quotation properly in a complete sentence. Don’t forget your (citation) at the end of the sentence.

Works Cited Noodle Tools Due when you turn in a final draft. There is a sample of one on my website. It even shows you how to properly cite The Metamorphosis from your text book. My website If you’re citing a source on your works cited page, then you better actually cite the source in the body of your essay
