Responsible E-waste Management at Apple

What is e-waste? E-waste is loosely discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electronic devices. Such as; computers, mobile phones, TV’s, and refrigerators. EPA estimates only 15% of e-waste is recycled.

http://greenlifesmartlife.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/e-waste.jpg

Why is it not being recycled? Many companies that say they will recycle e-waste merely export them to other, poorer countries There the waste is scrapped for materials in hazardous and unsafe ways.

What Apple is doing Apple offers a responsible recycling program They have two categories, reuse and recycle

Reuse Reuse is if a product still has some value and can be resold in another market If the product has value Apple offers gift cards as reimbursement

Recycle Recycling is for products that have no monetary value The products are mined for metals, plastics and glass to be used for other products

Percentage of e-waste components http://indiafirstfoundation.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/ewaste-pie-chart.gif

What else? Any Mac or PC can qualify for the recycling program. No purchase is necessary.

Also It is important to remove all information from your hard drive before recycling Apple will do this for you

Also Apple meets the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal. All waste is processed in the region it is collected. Must comply with health and safety regulations Apple does not use prison labor

Also Apple’s policy can be found here: http://images.apple.com/recycling/docs/Recycler-Controls.pdf
