Connecticut Trends in Population

Findings 1990 - 2015 Fairfield County experienced greatest period of growth between 1995 and 2000. Most counties (excluding Middlesex and Fairfield) experienced peak growth from 2000 to 2005. Middlesex County experienced peak growth from 1995-2000. From 2010 to 2015 only Fairfield County and Hartford County experienced and increase in population from the previous 5 year period.

County level migration data Overall movement is from one Connecticut County to another Connecticut County. When leaving the state, most frequent destinations are, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island… (Northeast generally) People are moving to Connecticut, just at a slightly lower number than individuals are moving from Connecticut.

Beyond Migration Another trend has been setting the stage for population change in Connecticut

Findings Births have been on the decline in Connecticut for most of the past 20+ years. The Great Recession had some impact on births and for most counties the number of births remained near constant or had a slight downturn.
