John Hamilton Importance of knowing our story Aligning Goals & Outcomes Across the Division Summary of session offered by Victoria Livingston, Coordinator of Co- Curricular Assessment & Program Review, University of Wisconsin- Platteville Importance of knowing our story Why aligning goals and outcomes matter To whom are we telling our story? Sources of accountability Our institutional contexts What story are we telling? Aligning/mapping What does this mean for the rest of your time at the institute? John Hamilton

On our recent accreditation survey report, there was a comment that although we were doing well in the various elements of our quality improvement program, we needed some way to demonstrate our effectiveness as a whole. What I got from the Institute was the realization that we need to tie it all in with the bigger picture – really look at Student Health Services and ask, “Are we meeting the needs of our students? Are our goals in alignment with those of the Division and the University?” Assessment is a way to connect the dots. Kristen fabiszewski

Map the process to plan the process Make decisions based on findings- spend time as a staff analyzing the findings and making decisions based on the findings for the future Rubrics & Focus Groups Fine tuning our process. Confirming our work. We need to consult outside of our department to get a different perspective. Student Affairs is doing a ton of amazing work throughout the country and assessing it. Check around the country first to see if it has been done before. Erin booth-caro

“As those who have done it know, an integrative approach to teaching and learning can get messy. But it gets no messier than life itself and, done well, can help bring order to chaotic raw experience, as is the case with any well-crafted cycle of action and reflection. The real question is whether we want higher education to be about life.” Parker Palmer, The Heart of Higher Education (p. 36) Matt Lewis People are generally hesitant to participate in assessment, because we see it as just another thing added onto our already over-full plates. But just as we ask our students to take the time to reflect on their studies, actions and involvement in order to make informed decisions about their personal lives and careers, good integrative assessment does not ask us to do more with limited resources; it simply asks that we stop to look at what we do to make sure it is having the effects we want.
