Rising Global Urbanization INDIA@COP22 Rising Global Urbanization In 1990, there were 10 mega-cities with 10 million inhabitants or more. In 2014, there were 28 mega-cities, home to a total 453 million people. The number of mega cities is projected to rise to 41 by 2030. Urbanization in India INDIA@COP22 In 2014, India’s population was 1.2 billion which is expected to increase to 1.5 billion by 2030. It is estimated that more than half of India’s Infrastructure for 2030 is yet to be built. 26% Urbanization in 1991 is expected to increase to 36% by 2020 and 40% by 2030. In terms of land mass, India accounts for 2.4% of the world surface area, but supports approx. 17.5% of the world population. The average per capita annual energy consumption in India in 2011 was only 0.6 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) as compared to global average of 1.88 toe. No country in the world has been able to achieve a HDI of 0.9 or more without an annual per capita energy consumption of 4 toe. Currently India’s HDI is at 0.586, India has a long way to go to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
