Mier Expedition In November of 1842 President Sam Houston sent a militia to patrol the Texas-Mexico border After several weeks of patrolling about 300 members of the militia decided to defy orders and they attacked the Mexican town of Mier 900 Mexican troops soon came to protect the town and the Texas militia was forced to surrender While being taken to Mexico City the Texans overpowered their guards and made an escape However many died, and those that survived were recaptured about a week later
