Road to Revolution Part 3

Words to Know…. Convention- a meeting of delegates to discuss political issues. Treaty- an agreement between people or countries

Leader of the convention! I. Convention of 1833 Delegates agreed to meet to discuss problems with Mexico Stephen F. Austin elected president of convention Sam Houston also shows up Texans decide to write down their concerns. Leader of the convention! Sam!

A. What did the Texans want? Texas should be made a separate state (no more Coahuila!) Immigration should be allowed Texans want to be exempt from certain import taxes

II. Problems for Austin Santa Anna finally agrees to some of the resolutions (immigration) Mexican authorities read Austin’s letter calling for a new government. (He is still loyal to Mexico) Austin is arrested in January 1834 and sent BACK to Mexico City De nada! Thanks, Santa Anna!

A. Austin’s Arrest Texans are shocked, they demand his release. After being imprisoned for 1 ½ years, he is finally released. His opinion on war has changed!

III. Convention of 1835 held at Washington-on- the-Brazos Colonists had 2 different views: War Party- Thought Santa Anna had become a dictator (not good) and war was their only option Peace Party- Thought war should be avoided at all costs
