NCTQ Teacher Prep Review: 2014-2016 Webinar August 18, 2014

Agenda Strengthening teacher preparation Plans for providing feedback to programs Regional discussions with teacher educator leaders Q&A

Goal: All new teachers should achieve a high level of competence First year of teaching should not be trial-and-error trial-by-fire Teacher preparation as the foundation of the teaching profession Ensuring all teachers have achieved competence in necessary knowledge and skills Auspices are not as important as results Alternate routes into of the profession should be judged by the same criteria as traditional

Standards: Assuring competence Overview of NCTQ standards Accepting individuals with requisite academic strength Ensuring that they know the subjects they will teach Training and guidance in effective techniques (e.g., reading, classroom management) Evidence of effectiveness and performance improvement Minimum core principles for assuring competent graduates We aim for productive dialogue about how to ensure all programs making these principles operational – and evidence needed to judge.

Feedback to programs: Appeals June 17 – September 30: Submit appeal with evidence August – November: NCTQ posts decisions on our website December: Rankings updated Last year: 54 programs appealed Corrected scores of 23 programs on our own All told, 68 standard scores corrected

More time to work together Moving next publication to 2016 provides opportunity for: Discussion of standards and methodology Dialogue on how best to collaborate on how to achieve mutually held goals Strengthening teacher preparation programs – and making sure that changes get recognition
