College and Career Ready

Definition (approved by State Board December 2012) College and Career Ready means an individual has the academic preparation, cognitive preparation, technical skills, and employability skills to be successful in postsecondary education, in the attainment of an industry recognized certification or in the workforce, without the need for remediation.

Academic Preparation Level of performance on college readiness exams for full admittance to post-secondary institutions without the need for remediation

Technical Skills Achievement of an industry recognized certification that enables students to advance in a career pathway

Cognitive Preparation Problem formulation, research, interpretation, communication, precision and accuracy

Basic Skills Reading Writing Listening Speaking Math

Critical Thinking Skills Decisive Creative Thinking Solves Problems Reasons

Interpersonal Skills Social Awareness Responsible Decision Making Self-Management and Self-Awareness

Career Interest Development Ability to engage in exploration and planning relevant to the students interests, for career preferences leading to post-secondary success

Gallup Survey Confidence in Institutions Survey of 2012 Confidence in public K-12 education fell to 29% -- a drop of 29 percentage points from 1973 Performance on common metrics (NAEP, graduation rates, dropout rates) are at their highest levels So why has confidence in public schools declined? Americans have become more cynical? Growing awareness of the international stage?

Solutions? Raising of standards – in Kansas, College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core) Recognizing our success as a state and a nation High graduation rate Low dropout rate High attendance rate High academic achievement on state assessments, SAT, ACT, NAEP As a nation, countries continue to send students to the US for study in an atmosphere of American ingenuity and creativity Educators Parents Communities Clear vision with focused and deliberate attention

Half-Empty or Half-Full?
