Academic Dishonesty Questions to ask yourself… What is cheating? What are the benefits of cheating? What are the problems with cheating? Is cheating ever justified? How can you prevent cheating?

What is Academic Dishonesty? Facilitating Academic Dishonesty: “intentionally or knowingly attempting to help another” to cheat. Misrepresentation: “consists of providing false information to a teacher concerning an academic assignment.” Failure to contribute to a collaborative project: “involves not doing ones fair share.” Sabotage: “consists of actions that prevent others from completing their work.”

Why do students cheat? Pressure Students feel justified in what they are doing Poor time management Lack of motivation To help friends No fear of getting caught

Guidelines to prevent cheating… Prioritize work Use proper time management Be early Start homework individually, identify problems, ask questions BEFORE the homework is due! Be focused When encountering problems do not give up easily; try and try again! Ask for help! Be proud Don’t believe other people are smarter than you. Be strict with free riders Remember cheating brings short term success but long term failure!
