Welcome to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Evening October 2017

What is the Early Years Foundation Stage? The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year. The EYFS Framework 2017 sets the standard that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and provides the foundation for good future progress through school and life.

The EYFS is centered around a play based curriculum. Importance of play The EYFS is centered around a play based curriculum.

The 7 areas of learning and development 3 prime areas Personal, social and emotional development Communication and language 3. Physical development 4 specific areas. 1. Literacy 2. Mathematics 3. Understanding the world 4. Expressive arts and design.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development The children will be learning to: become self-confident; have awareness of their own feelings and feelings of others; tell the difference between right and wrong. take an interest in things; become independent;

Communication and Language The children will be learning to: talk confidently and clearly; show awareness of listener enjoy listening to stories, songs and poems, showing good attention; follow instructions; answer questions about stories

Physical Development The children will be learning to: move confidently; control their body; handle equipment. manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs including dressing and undressing independently

Workshop Tuesday 14th November 2.00pm. Literacy The children will be learning to: use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud c a t segment the word by saying each phoneme (sound) then blend the phonemes to read the word use phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sound use a pencil effectively to write in a pre- cursive style (see handout) Please use the guidance in the front of the Home School Link Book. Phonics Workshop Tuesday 14th November 2.00pm.

Mathematics The children will be learning to: develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs and games. become comfortable with numbers and mathematical concepts and language such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger’; be aware of shapes and space. learn number facts

Rapid Recall Children will be given a Maths Passport which will accompany them through school to develop rapid recall of key number facts. Each child will be given a target to practise in school and at home eg say the numbers 0-10 accurately, know doubles of all numbers up to 5. Please see the school website and the Home School Link Book for further details.

Understanding the World The children will: explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it; build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for; find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives; find out about different cultures and beliefs.

Expressive Arts and Design The children will explore: colours and shapes; Creative activities role play; making music and singing songs

Typical school day Register, welcome, wake and shake Whole class teaching activity ‘COOL’ time (Choose Our Own Learning) moving between the outside area, the classrooms and shared middle area. Milk and Snack Phonics whole class activity Lunch Register, wake and shake ‘COOL’ time/PE/RE Playtime Story and end of day

Please come to the Reception unit and see how it works in action! Stay and Play (tomorrow) Friday 13th 9.15am-10.30am. Please drop your child as usual then make your way to the front office to sign in.
