What is Piracy and Laws on Downloading and Uploading in Canada Downloading copyrighted documents (music) from peer to peer network is legal in Canada Uploading files is illegal The Copyright Board of Canada imposed a government fee of $25 if you are caught downloading files illegally

Software Piracy Statistics 5 interesting facts about Software Piracy 1. Software piracy is a victimless crime. 2. Software copy protection makes software more expensive. 3. Software copy protection gets in the way of the legitimate user. 4. Inexpensive software is not copied. 5. Any protection system can be cracked. Therefore, protection is useless.

What is copyright? The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic.

What is the punishment? Anyone found to have infringed a copyrighted work may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed and, if willful infringement is proven by the copyright owner, that amount may be increased up to $150,000.

How can companies and major corporations be hurt by software piracy? Although most know about software piracy, many people don't fully understand how Companies and other major Corporations are hurt by Software Piracy. Software companies, for example, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, IBM have suffered the Effects from people using illegal software Without piracy we could increase revenue by 30 to 50 percent. At the very least, this would mean that there would be fresh funds available for investment to hire 7 to 10 additional staff in research and development.

How can Companies and Major Corporations be hurt by Software Piracy? This means that there is no funds available for investment to hire additional staff in research and development. The new products may be postponed due to the limited workforce. The reputation of company is also affected If those who create and write software do not get paid for their efforts, they will stop writing software. Subsequently, we as a society suffer. Microsoft which has launched the WGA programme to distinguish the genuine and suspicious products as a result of this, and only take responsibility for only genuine products

In Conclusion Pirating software hurts the developing company which hurts consumers by rising of the price of the product and it affects the economy in causing job losses.
