Striving for Excellence in Your Career as a Teacher of English 王恩铭

Introduction According to UNESCO, the quality of education can be expressed and measured by the following formula: Quality=[students(1 point)+textbook(2 points)+environment(3 points)+ pedagogy (4 points)] ×teacher 1

I. Excellence in Your Expertise in English English Skills: Listening, Writing, Speaking, Reading, and Translating A. In particular, for teachers of English at middle school, pronunciation, intonation and fluency are crucial. Indeed, they should be given top priority. B. Additionally, four other elements should be given equal weighty in importance. They are, namely, accuracy, variety, elegance, and finally idiomaticity 2

II. Excellence in Your Job as a Teacher of English Ability to get students interested in English Ability to facilitate the process of English learning on the part of students Ability to help students acquire English language in the most efficient and effective way possible Ability to find good approaches/ways to improve and advance students’ English Ability to conduct intercultural communication 3

Excellence in Your Job as a Teacher of English Ability to employ different teaching methodologies, i.e. grammar-based, translation-based, audio-visual-based, audio-lingual-based, top-down, bottom-up, student-centered, communicative approaches Having passion for English Loving your job Cherishing students 4

II. Excellence in Your Job as a Teacher of English Committing yourself to your occupation, treating it not so much as a job as your career, vocation or calling Embracing everything related to your career with a degree of religiosity 5

III. Excellence in Your Life as a Person All-round development A decent amount/stock of knowledge of general information Highly cultivated in literary field High-brow culture in taste Knowledgeable in liberal arts 6

III. Excellence in Your Life as a Person Well-informed in humanities Capable of doing critical thinking Not only sophisticated in book learning, but also street-wise(common-sense) in daily-life matters Developing wide-ranging interests 7

IV. Excellence in Your Effort to Achieve Success as a Dreamer Imagine the unimaginable, and think the unthinkable (Einstein believed that to ask questions is more important than to solve problems. Similarly, he also believed that imagination is more important than knowledge). Be innovative and creative Build confidence in yourself (The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little while) 8

IV. Excellence in Your Effort to Achieve Success as a Dreamer Keep updating yourself with new ideas , new approaches, new way of thinking Keep perfecting yourself in both teaching and studying Fully utilize any opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with fellow teachers and learn from each other Maximize all opportunities to communicate with your students 9

IV. Excellence in Your Effort to Achieve Success as a Dreamer Constantly reflect on what you have done in your teaching-related work, summarizing anything useful and effective from your teaching experience Improve and perfect your teaching skills and methods by applying fresh ideas and new approaches 10

Conclusion Passion for English Full, undivided, uncompromising, and single-minded commitment to your job/career. We are not merely making a living by teaching English; we are making a life out of it Stay humble and stay hungry (Steve Jobs) 11

You are sure to find out your roadmap to success if you keep trying discriminatively, sensibly, creatively, and above all, wisely. An American educator William Arthur Ward said: The mediocre teacher talks; the good teacher explains; the superior teacher demonstrates; the great teacher inspires. 13
