Dutchess Community College English Composition 101/102 Mrs. Caruso

English 101: Composition 1 This course addresses the major principles of college writing, which are meant to serve students in all the disciplines across the curriculum. The course concentrates primarily on expository and argumentative writing; traditional rhetorical modes; and effective composing, revising, and editing strategies. English 101 covers MLA conventions, and a research paper is required. Critical thinking and reading skills are also stressed. Topics Covered: Writing as a process Rhetorical forms Persuasive writing MLA style Research techniques Thesis development Revising and editing skills: review of grammar, syntax, diction and mechanics Individual or group oral presentation which may include debates, discussion of topics, etc. ENG 102: COMPOSITION II This course is a continuation of ENG 101 with emphasis on the longer composition and the process of documentation. Techniques of research are taught, culminating in the production of an original, extensive, multiple source, fully documented, literary research paper. Informational literacy is stressed through advanced library skills as well as hands-on experience utilizing computers in researching and developing projects. Interpretive skills are developed through the introduction of literature. Topics Covered: Writing a fully documented, multiple source, literary research paper with citations based on the result of personal investigation; Efficiently using the library as a research facility and the Internet as a research tool; Evaluating research sources, both written and electronic; Demonstrating effective composition skills through the writing of critical essays about literary elements Defining and applying terms and concepts used in literary discussion.

Class structure: Mondays, the chapter from our text is introduced with notes and discussion. Students are given the assigned reading due each Friday. Midweek, students read and discuss the chapter and prepare for their written work. At the end of the week, students take a content quiz and write a journal entry. Class Syllabus and Web Page Essays are assigned at the beginning of the week due the following week based on the rhetorical device for each chapter such as : descriptive, narrative, cause and effect, or process analysis.
