EXPECTATIONS Read your chosen short story & answer the short story analysis questions. Locate sources and make T-notes with citations on author, theme, characters, setting or other literary elements. Make T-notes with quotes from your story to match comments from the literary criticism.       * If you are absent, you will have to go to the library on your own  time or use the library databases from home to get your sources.  Complete EACH STEP of the writing process ON TIME to get needed & constructive feedback BEFORE the next section is due. The research paper WILL BE YOUR ANALYSIS of a Short Story explaining the effect that an author's environment (historical events AND/OR social, economic, political issues) had on their writing (focusing on the story you selected).

Notes on getting to a good thesis statement Developing your thesis in a literary analysis paper: State a relevant theme of the work in a complete sentence (What is one of the implications about the world or about our lives that the story suggests to the readers? What does the reader learn about life through the reading of the literary work?) Example: People often cling thoughtlessly to outdated traditions in spite of tragic consequences. (a central theme of "The Lottery") Think about how one aspect of the short story (e.g. the author's point of view, the change in a particular character, the presence of a certain symbolic element) moves the readers toward grasping that theme. In other words, what is the relationship between the particular aspects you are analyzing and one of the story's specific themes? Craft a one sentence thesis that expresses this relationship between the literary elements, theme and how the author's environment effected the work you selected to analyze. If you are having problems writing your thesis statement, see me or visit the Writing Center in E 130 before and after school on Tuesdays & Thursdays starting January 10, 2017.

Rough draft reminders Thesis statements must be LAST SENTENCE of the INTRODUCTION paragraph. All body paragraphs should be at least 6-8 sentences long. All body paragraphs must have a TOPIC SENTENCE AND a CONCLUSION SENTENCE of your own.  Use parenthetical citations for all quotes and paraphrases from secondary sources. DO NOT use first or second person pronouns (no "I", "we", "us", or "you")
