Two Main Types of Diffusion? There are two main types of Diffusion Expansion Diffusion- This kind of Diffusion stays strong in it's Hearth regardless of where the idea is spread, spreads outwards. Relocation Diffusion- It does exactly what it implies, as the idea spreads it becomes weaker in its hearth but stronger wherever it relocates.

Expansion Diffusion Expansion Diffusion is a form of diffusion where, rather than an idea or innovation moving alongside a group of people, it expands outwards from the Hearth. This is done through one of three ways: Contagiously,Hierarchically, or through stimulus diffusion.

Hierarchical Diffusion Hierarchical Diffusion is a form of diffusion in which an idea or innovation spreads by trickling down from a population of a larger size or of a higher social class, to a lower population. Usually spreads from one urban area to another, eventually spreading outward towards surrounding areas.

Contagious Diffusion Contagious Diffusion is the distance-controlled spreading of an idea, innovation, or some other item through a local population by contact from person to person. This type of diffusion is usually compared to the flu, because it is contracted from person to person. Is distance controlled, meaning it isn’t usually traveling large distances due to its personal nature. People have to interact in order for diffusion to occur, and people lose interest over time. Spreads equally through people, regardless of social class or economic position.

Stimulus Diffusion Stimulus diffusion is the spread of an idea or underlying principle even through a new group that has changed said idea. It can also be an idea that changes and doesn’t possess the normal traits because of cultural or other barriers.

Examples of Expansion Diffusion Contagious- An example of this type of diffusion would be gossip or information. Despite your social class or background, everyone has access to some type of media or other people who have access, meaning they can all hear gossip or new information. Hierarchical- A great example of this type of diffusion is the television, which started as something only wealthy people had, then diffused down into the middle and even lower classes. Stimulus- Porcelain china is a popular stimulus diffusion example. It started out expensive and in Asia, then Europeans found out how to make it cheaper and then they used it.

Relocation Diffusion The Spread of an idea through physical movement of people from one place to another. Essentially as people move or migrate a lot of the time they take their ideas and customs along with them. In result their ideas become stronger as more move to that given area and weaker in its original hearth because of the fact that people migrate from it.

Migrant Diffusion Ideas relocate and move along with their people who migrate. Ideas become strong and are adopted by those who are expressed to them. As the ideas migrate from one place to another, those same ideas slowly leave original Hearth and eventually fade out completely.

Examples of Relocation Diffusion The migration of Christianity with European settlers who came to America. During colonial era, hundreds of thousands of Indians were transported to other countries including Africa, Caribbean and South America, spreading Hinduism far beyond it's original core.

Barriers in Diffusion Cultural- When it comes to diffusion new ideas are presented to places that already have their own. With that being said not everyone will accept the cultural ideas like religion over their own. Things like cultural Taboos are a barrier. Physical- This isn't as much of a barrier as it used to be but it still presents itself as one. They prohibit adoption of the new idea or innovation, again not as big because of how it can diffuse through technology. Time-Distance Decay- The farther something like an idea or innovation is from an area the longer it will take for it to reach some off in the distance place. This leaves less time for the idea or innovation to be adopted by those who are presented with this new idea. Although it is more likely the same trait will develop but only differently
