Project definition and organization milestones & work-plan Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Milestones associated to the TP t0= Atlas approval of TDAQ action → funds become available Performance vs. Min PT at 3×1034 reduction workload a factor 2-4 3 months Single track efficiency vs. beam offset done very stable 3 months Investigate adding XON/XOFF to new HOLA done 4 months Improve efficiency in the barrel/forward interface region advanced 6 months Performance versus dead channel fraction (wildcard option) on going 6 months TSP simulation including varying-resolution pattern banks advanced 8 months Optimization of clustering at 3×1034 just started 9 months Production readiness review for dual-output HOLA expected June 11 12 months Specify system size for 3×1033, 1×1034, and 3×1034 advanced 12 months Prototype in lab (EDRO & AM); start TDAQ integration on going 12 months Handling FTK errors in level-2 and Event Filter 14 months Studies with real ATLAS data just started 18 months Select baseline design 18 months Integrate FTKSim into ATHENA urgent 18 months TDR including tests of prototype boards 24 months Paola TDAQ 13-09-2010

Workpackages AMchip Boards Integration: Vertical Slice → Demonstrator → Phase I system Integration into TDAQ, DCS Connection to L2 and detector Board’s integration, diagnostics, tests Simulation studies and data analysis Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

AMCHIP Deliverables (in red) 2011 a single 65 nm 12 mm^2 MPW block chip - TSMC; 2012 small MPW production or 24 mm^2 MPW followed by smaller production for 8 PUs (yield will make the decision) 2014 12 x 12 mm^2 chip, full wafer masks + 6 wafer production. 2015-2016-2017 small productions of 6-12 wafers each year. Work Plan: Develop two full custom cells (pattern and majority logic) and the standard cell project (control logic) in parallel (3 designers) Coordinate all parts toghether and simulate intensively the whole project, before and after placing&routing Test vector generation by a high level C++ program Final checks (DRC, LVS) and timing analysis before submission with help of IMEC Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Boards: Deliverables (in red) 2011-2012 prototype development for each board 2012 insertion in the vertical slice & diagnostic tools development; eventually II prototype, first small production (if LHC will run on 2013 otherwise 1 year later) 2013 insertion in the experiment; small production 2014-17 partial production each year to complete phase-I system Workplan Design the board Design the Firmware Simulate the logic Optimize Layout, Placement and Routing Analogical Simulation of critical nets Prototype production and assembly Tests and diagnostic production set of small productions of board: test and commissioning Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Vertical slice: Deliverables (in red) 2010 Creation of a “powerful” test stand for boards 2011 Development of control software and tests 2011-2012 integration of prototypes in a single test; diagnostic development 2012-2013 integration in ATLAS. Development of procedures, monitoring, data bases…. 2013 or 2014 data taking Workplan Setup of a 5kW crate for cooling tests transfer of all CDF software into the ATLAS framework test setup of single boards and boards together production of all needed software for TDAQ, DCS integration installation of few Hola2 to connect to a small detector section connection to L2 Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Demonstrator→Phase I: Deliverables (in red) 2012 or 2013 installation of Hola2 during long shutdown 2013 enlargement of vertical slice to cover the barrel 2013-2014 data taking 2015 extension to the forward/backward detector regions 2015-2016-2017 increase computing power as needed Workplan Substitute all Holas (small bunches), reconnect TDAQ & test Connect FTK barrel to detector and L2 and test Extend control, diagnostic…software and data bases to barrel Continue the extension to whole detector Update the system adding PUs. Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Simulation studies and data analysis 2011 Completion of FTK architecture studies 2011-2012 Development of new HLT selections based on FTK track use 2011-2012 simulation of FTK on real data and comparison to generator data 2013-2014 data analysis to evaluate FTK-based trigger rates and signal efficiencies 2013-2014 analysis of b and tau samples to search Z→bb, Z→tau tau measure Z efficiencies 2013-2014 analysis of hadronic B physics samples to understand efficiencies. 2013-2014 analysis of diboson samples to understand their efficiencies for lepton and jet channels Workplan complete FTKsim make FTKsim available in Athena develop new b, tau, lepton selections based on early available tracks (TDR) study on data rates and object/particle efficiencies of new selections Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010

Conclusions A lot of work has to be done Time could be short if the long shutdown is really in 2012 The first FTK data taking is probably not before 2014 Paola - FTK review 2-12-2010
