Plant Parts of Vascular Plants

Vascular plants have special cells that move water throughout the plant. Vascular means “with tubes.”

Let’s name the parts of this flowering plant: leaf stem What important part cannot be seen?

Did you say “roots”? What’s the job of the roots? They anchor, or hold, the plant in place. They have tiny hairs that help take in water and nutrients from the soil. They store extra food for future use.

What does the stem do? The stem’s jobs: The stem connects the roots and leaves The stem takes the food and water to the rest of the plant. The stem keeps the plant upright The stem can be herbaceous (bendable) or . . .

What does the stem do? . . . woody (like a tree’s trunk and branches).

Tree Stems

Why do plants have leaves? The leaf takes in energy from the sun (sunlight) and carbon dioxide. The leaf releases oxygen into the air. The leaf makes food (energy) for the plant. The process of making food is called photosynthesis.

The Seed The seed contains a new plant.

Where are the seeds? In flowering plants, seeds are in the flowers or fruit

“Hey insects, come over here!” The Flower What does the flower do? The flower is the reproductive part of the plant. The flower attracts insects by its color and smell so insects can pollinate the flower. After being pollinated, the flower makes the seeds. “Hey insects, come over here!”

The Fruit The fruit provides a covering for the seeds. It can be fleshy (like an apple) or hard (like a nut).

Where are the seeds? Cone-bearing plants – seeds are in the cones

Where are the seeds? Ferns – seeds are in the spores

Plants are important to our habitat! Plants give: Shelter Oxygen Food to animals And more…… Take care of a plant today!!
