Review – What did we learn last time? Principles of Instruction: ICEPAC Interest Comprehension Emphasis Participation Accomplishment Confirmation

What are some different ways you can teach?

Two main types of lessons: Knowledge Skill Plan carefully Break down skill into steps Rehearse sequence to ensure clear & accurate Prepare lesson plan Prepare materials for demo/practice Organize class to see demo Allow cadets to practice under supervision Provide assistance/ re-demo Practice until skill is achieved Select an instructional method Research info thoroughly Summarize info Prepare questions/activities Prepare confirmation Prepare training aids

Group Activity Break into six groups. Each group will be given a card with a method of instruction. Prepare to explain this method to the class. Brainstorm what topics would be best taught with this method.

Practical Activity How to do it: Review background info Distribute handouts Introduce activity Stress safety Brief cadets on expectations Do activity Supervise and provide assistance Watch for safety infractions Conclude activity Debrief cadets Various applications Prep: Know skill, gather material, organize area, ensure timings, prepare handouts, get assistants if necessary, divide cadets into groups Activity based learning

Prep: specify objectives, determine time and location, obtain authorization, determine timings, determine activities needed, determine personnel, arrange transport, supervision, and meals, determine equipment requirements, groupings, safety Field Trip Participate in an activity in a real-life setting Applications: introduce/illustrate topics, reinforce learning, inject variety, view things that can’t be seen in the classroom How to do it: Inform cadets (time/place) Brief cadets (objectives, timings/groupings, what they will be doing) During (ensure safety, participation, and objectives are met) After (debrief & confirm objectives)

Demonstration & Performance Cadets observe the skill then practice under supervision How to do it: Demonstrate skills Explain where & why Handouts Explain & demo each step Practice, reinforce positives, provide correction, Perform skill for confirmation Encourage practice outside of class Prep: know skill, gather materials, break down into steps, practice, prep handouts, organize training area Applications: teach hands-on concepts

Prep: develop game (simple, quick, easy to organize, few rules, minimal equipment, maximum participation), use variations of games cadets know, determine how games will work, obtain resources, organize training area Game Cadets can practice skills and confirm knowledge How to do it: Brief cadets on objectives & rules Play game (supervise, ensure safety & participation) End game Debrief cadets Applications – must support learning

Interactive Lecture Best used for knowledge lessons & involves instructor lead activities Applications: introducing a subject, background information, instructions, reviews, concepts, etc How to do it: Begin each TP with an attention-getter Use visual aids Pay attention to alertness & deal with problems Interesting facts, participatory questions & activity Confirm each TP with questions Lesson confirmation Prep: Use attention getters, participatory questions, evaluative questions, training aids, in-class activity, practice

In-Class Activity Used to stimulate interest and encourage participation in class Prep: create activity, specify objective, obtain materials, write-out instructions, write-out directions, arrange for assistants, prepare handouts, organize training area How to do it: Introduce activity Brief on expectations Stress timings Ensure resources Begin activity Supervise & assist Conclude Confirm TPs Debrief Applications: can be used in both knowledge and skill lessons

Confirmation Activity Look at the handouts provided. Describe which method of instruction you would use for each topic. Briefly explain why you would use this method.
