Central Place Function Communities that serve as a central destination for people from the surrounding areas. The functions of the central place destination may be a variety of things. (health care, shopping, entertainment, etc.)

Break Of Bulk Function These are communities that are destinations for large quantities of wholesale goods. (Bulk Goods) Good are shipped there, re-organized and reshipped. Some goods remain in that destination. (Halifax has a container terminal and participates in this function)

Specialized Communites The extent in which a community specializes in different areas of industry. It is calculated using the Location Quotient formula. LQ (location quotient) = % of people from a community employed in an industry % of people from Canada employed in the same industry (higher than 1 is specialized)
