What is BCE and CE? BCE = Before Common Era CE = Common Era It’s a timeline

What is BC and AD? BC = Before Christ AD = Anno Domini (Latin for “In the Year of Our Lord) Who’s ‘Lord’?

Why are we in the Year 2017? The standard calendar we use today around the world is the Christian calendar Also called the “Gregorian Calendar” So, Year 0 is the birth of Christ, the beginning of Christianity We use 1 calendar internationally to avoid confusion Are there other calendars besides this one?

Many other Calendars! Chinese Calendar Islamic Calendar Buddhist Calendar Hebrew (Jewish) Calendar Egyptian Calendar Babylonian Calendar Hindu Calendar Ethiopian Calendar Many others! Some in still in use today, others are not

Remember! BCE = BC CE = AD They are the same thing!! Why don’t we just use BC and AD? You can, but most historians don’t. Saying AD is saying that Jesus Christ is your Lord. AD means “In the Year of Our Lord” Not everyone is Christian (especially historians)

Timeline Same As Number Line BCE = Negative numbers CE = Positive numbers CE starts at Year 0 For example: 100 BCE is the same as -100 100 CE is the same as +100 How many years are between 100 BCE and 100 CE? Find the range
