ENTERPRISE COMMUNITY PARTNERS’ GREEN COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE PRE-GREENBUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING EVENT NOVEMBER 5, 2007

Enterprise mission is to see that all low-income people in the United States have the opportunity for fit and affordable housing and to move up and out of poverty into the mainstream of American life. Wanted to re-think what fit and affordable means. Fit structurally and to live in. Affordable to purchase/lease and to operate.

Goals of Green Communities: $555 mm to create 8,500 environmentally sustainable affordable homes Transform how we locate, design and build affordable housing Build bridge between environmentalists and community developers Reaching out to developers and home builders to achieve an increase in the use of green building practices, lower costs to go green, and a competitive advantage in market place as demand for green goes up. Will make an impact through healthier environments, lower life cycle costs, better opportunities Policy makers, funders and leaders – green communities is a path to forming new coalitions, new ways of thinking, and finding new sources of support Enterprise will address additional costs by providing grants to help developers to “go green” in a cost-effective manner, as well as help cover construction cost gaps. Enterprise also will provide low-interest loans and substantial equity capital commitments to affordable housing developments that meet the Green Communities criteria. Finally, Enterprise will provide, or arrange for developers to receive, training and technical support and access to state and local incentives for healthy, energy efficient housing. These measures will provide strong incentives for participation and ensure “going green” will not result in higher costs for low-income residents or fewer affordable homes overall.

Results to Date Over $430,000,000 invested in Green grants, loans and equity Over 9300 sustainable homes underway in 226 developments across 25 states Over 3,000 professionals exposed to training thru in-person and on-line events 20 state and local housing policies more sustainable 10 state/local partnerships to advance holistic systems change Accurate as of October 2007

GREEN COMMUNITIES IMPACT: 9200 HOMES 65 Million gallons of water saved 1150 children with asthma helped $465,000 saved in asthma related medical costs $450 annual utility bill savings per household Over $4 million annually in total 10,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions reduced We use a simple spreadsheet to calculate an approximate benefit. Whatever the actual numbers are, they are impressive (don’t try to defend these but they use conservative, supportable multipliers for the various categories)
