Call Numbers and Using Destiny in the Media Center

Our Learning Objectives C.O.: I know what the information on a book call number means. L.O.: I can utilize Destiny to find the call number for a book and then locate the book in the media center.

What are call numbers? A call number is the label located on the spine of a book. It is like the book’s address in the library – it tells you where it “lives.” Call Numbers actually provide a lot of information. They give you clues about where the book is located in the media center.

Sections of Our Library Fiction Section These are novels. Call numbers begin with FIC, followed by the 1st 3 letters of the author’s last name. Examples: FIC COL FIC SMI FIC WIL

Library Sections (cont) Nonfiction Section These books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System. Call numbers range from 000 to 999, followed by the 1st three letters of the author’s last name. The numbers represent the books subject. 398.2 AND 741.5 SMI 972.34 JON

Anatomy of a Call Number Books about soccer are given the call number 796.334 796.334 34= Soccer 700= Arts and Recreation 96=Sports And Games 3=Games that Use a ball

Library Sections B LIN B GOM B PELTZ Biography Section Books about famous people. Arranged alphabetically by the subject’s last name B LIN B PELTZ B GOM

What is Destiny? Destiny is Stout’s OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) An OPAC is a listing of all of the materials available in the library You can use Destiny from any computer that is connected to the internet (even at home)!

How to find Destiny In the library you can click on the Destiny Icon on the desktop of the computers (it says Stout Library). From anywhere you can go to: libraries.resa.net Click Dearborn Public Schools, then Click Stout Middle School

Searching with Destiny The default search is “keyword.” If you enter a search term and press “enter” it will search via keyword. Keyword is typically the easiest way to search if you are not sure what you are looking for (i.e. “dogs” or “wrestling”)

Ways to Search Keyword is the default search and is best for searching common, simple terms such as “flowers.” You can search by Title. You must have the correct title with the correct spelling for this search to be effective. You can also search by Author. Again, correct spelling is important.

Ways to Search cont. You can search by Subject. This is probably most useful when searching for nonfiction books. You can search by Series. You probably will not use this much because if you are familiar with a series you could just search by title or author instead.

Now how do I find my book? First make sure the book is checked IN Use the CALL NUMBER to locate the book on the shelf “FIC” means the Fiction section, Numbers mean the Non-Fiction section “B” means Biography

What order are the books in? “FIC” books (fiction) are in alphabetical order by the author’s last name Non-fiction books are arranged using the Dewey Decimal System----which is by category or subject © The Nifty Librarian, TPT
