What is a kaleidoscope? A tube-like instrument that contains loose pieces of glass and other objects that are reflected by mirrors and or lenses set at different angles to create various symmetrical patterns when viewed through one end of the tube. “Kaleidoscope” came from the Greek words meaning “beautiful to see”. It is a mandala in action.

What is a Mandala? A circular design containing concentric geometric forms, symbolizing the universe, totality, or wholeness in Hinduism and Buddhism. Kaleidoscope images are referred to as Mandalas.

Where is this Headed? You will be creating a kaleidoscope type design using the letters of your first or last name. You will be working with Principle of Design: Balance (and specifically, Radial Balance) You will be working in the media of Colored Pencil and developing your technique with the media.

Unit Overview Review basic lettering styles. Complete lettering exercise.(Use binder and lettering books as reference to complete) Pick up handout on final assignment. Design 2 thumbnails for kaleidoscope (minimum). Finally, solve problem and create product.

4 Main Types of Lettering Roman Gothic Text Decorative Composed of thick and thin strokes; has serifs. Composed of same width strokes; has no serifs (sans serifs). Composed of thick and thin strokes; is fancy; has unique serifs. Designed to express different moods.

Lettering Worksheet Get lettering worksheet, and ruler. You may also use any of the books on lettering as reference. Using your ruler make guides in each square to ensure your letters are consistently the same thickness and height.

Colored Pencil Techniques Frottage: a method of creating texture by rubbing over objects.

Colored Pencil Techniques Crosshatch: same method of shading when using graphite but try using multiple colors like analogous and overlap them.

Colored Pencil Techniques Tonal Gradation: is just subtly changing the value of a single color.

Colored Pencil Techniques Color Gradation: blending one color into the next. Be sure the colors overlap one another.

Colored Pencil Techniques Stipple: method of using dots to shade..try using multiple colors and overlapping them.

Complete Colored Pencil Techniques Worksheet Practice the different colored pencil techniques in the space provided. You must completely fill the space. Craftsmanship & creativity count!

Final Product Divide a sheet of 12” X 12” white drawing paper into 8 triangles. The triangle on the thumbnail is the same size as each triangle on the final paper. Two triangles make one square. Trace your name design. Put a mirror image next to it to complete the square.

To Create A Mirror Image Lay your design face down on to the light box. Put the final paper on top and trace the image. Repeat this process in the remaining three squares. Color with colored pencil selecting a color scheme such as cool/warm, complementary, analogous etc. Cut and mount onto final paper. Submit to turn in box.
