Plate tectonics ch. 7

Ch. 7 Notes- Plate Tectonics Theory that explains how large pieces of the Earth’s outermost layer move and change shape

What are examples of tectonic plates? (hint there are 10 total)

Answer: Cocos plate, North American plate, African plate, Indian plate, Eurasian plate, etc.

Convergent boundary The boundary formed by the collision of two lithospheric plates

Divergent Boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other

Transform boundary The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally

What type of plate boundary do you think mountains are formed at? Why?

It’s not my fault!!! Fault A break in a body of rock along which one block slides relative to another

By looking at the picture below, what do you think occurs along a fault? Why?

Compression Stress that occurs when forces act to squeeze an object

Which layer of the earth undergoes a lot of compression? Why?

Tension Stress that occurs when forces act to stretch an object

Can you think of some examples of tension??

Folding The bending of rock layers due to stress

Uplift The rising of regions of the Earth’s crust to higher elevations

Subsidence The sinking of regions of the Earth’s crust to lower elevations
