Figurative Language in Poetry

Allusion a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers.

Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Imagery language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch)

Metaphor a comparison between two things without using like or as

Simile a comparison between two things that uses like or as

Meter the rhythm of syllables in a line of verse or in a stanza of a poem. Depending on the language, this pattern may have to do with stressed and unstressed syllables, syllable weight, or number of syllables.

Personification when an author gives a nonhuman thing human traits

Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration in order to make a point

Rhyme Scheme a poet's deliberate pattern of lines that rhyme with other lines in a poem or a stanza.

Rhythm A literary device which demonstrates the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables particularly in verse form.

Symbolism the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.
