Ice-Breaker Name and 2-3 things people need to know about you

Skills Building Exercise Let’s talk about note-taking (small group discussion) Lecture Tip of the Day: Listen and take notes from beginning to end. How many of you took notes when Professor Burke introduced the course? How many of you packed up before Professor Izenberg finished his lecture? Why does it matter? Active Learning Tips: https://eee.uci.edu/14f/28010/weekone/Morse_ActiveLearningStrategies_F14.pdf

Note-Taking – Problems and Tips Top 5 tips for effective note-taking from Seton Hill University More note-taking tips 5 different Note-Taking Methods

Lecture Review and Context Building… According to Professor Izenberg, why begin with the Iliad? What are the theories about who wrote this text down or how it came to be? Who or what was Homer? To what extent can we consider the Iliad a template for the present or for the modern era? What does it mean to interpret a text? What did Simone Weil’s interpretation of the Iliad require of the text?

Writing Diagnostic (25 min.) Read the prompt carefully and spend 25 minutes writing a response using a formal essay structure and your best, free-style, academic English. Write your name on the prompt paper This is not a graded exercise (but you will earn up to 25 WP) Prompt: What do you understand by the term “war”? How does or has war impact(ed) your life?
