External influences The power of the law in changing, making and influencing decisions of businesses Government Enact and develop legislation (laws) to govern us/behaviours Consumer Protection Health & Safety Protection Employee Protection Competition Protection Environmental Protection

Your rights are protected Consumer Protection Consumers are protected through Sale of Good Act (1979) and the Trade Descriptions Act (2008) Sale of Good Act makes sure business sell products that are ‘fit for purpose’ It is very powerful law It can make firms completely replace products you are no happy with, or have even the potential for faults (e.g. cars, phones) The law is instinctively on the consumers side. It is up to the producer to prove the claim is not true Trade Descriptions Act makes sure businesses do not lie. This Big Mac can be part of the five a day……stops firms from making spurious claims ‘Hmmmm Danone’ and healthy active yoghurts http://uk.businessinsider.com/false-advertising-scandals-2016-3/#vw-falsely- advertised-environmentally-friendly-diesel-cars-1

Employee protection Protects the right of workers Possible advantage Possible disadvantage for the business Protects the right of workers Sick pay / maternity leave / fair pay / redundancy rights / conditions of work Impact of national living wage http://www.bbc.co.uk/ news/business- 36161581

Making sure the markets are ‘fair’ Competition Protection Making sure the markets are ‘fair’

Health & safety in the workplace Health & Safety Protection Health & safety in the workplace Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 put the burden of responsibility on the employer, not the employee The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecutes firms that contravene H&S law Video examples of H&S in the workplace and how it is managed can be found here  http://www.hse.gov.uk/business/case-studies.htm
