Structure of the Atom

Parts of the Atom Neutron: The part of the atom with no charge Electron: The part of the atom with a negative charge Press Nucleus: The center or brain of the atom. Contains the protons & neutrons Press Valence Shell: The outer most shell of an atom Proton: The part of the atom with a positive charge

Electron Flow Some materials possess loosely bound electrons in the outer shell (valence) of their atoms. These materials are classified as Conductors. Their electrons are easily dislodged and are capable of moving from one atom to the next. This movement of electrons is called Electron Flow. Electron movement in one direction is called Direct Current. Play Animation

Atom Vocabulary Atom Nucleus Proton Neutron Electron (e-) The building block of matter Nucleus The center/brain of the atom Proton Positively charged particle Neutron Particle with no charge Electron (e-) Negatively charged particle

Atom Vocabulary Valence Shell Conductor Insulator Outer most shell Conductor Material with loosely bound electrons Allows e- flow Insulator Material with tightly bound electrons No e- flow Negative Ion- Atom with more e- than protons Positive Ion – Atom with more protons than e-
