Chapter 1 Fitness and Wellness for All 1.1 Fitness For Life Physical Fitness- is the ability of your body systems to work together effectively to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living. A fit person : 1-can perform school work as well as have energy to participate in school sports. 2-has the ability to respond to normal life situations (ex. raking leaves) 3-can respond to emergency situations (ex. running to get help) Most people become less active as they get older. The activities you choose can be those you enjoy most and which are fun for you!!!

Health and Wellness Health- the state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being. Wellness- a state of being that enables you to reach your fullest potential. Health is no longer only referred to being absent from disease or illness. Negative component of health is illness (we want to treat and prevent) Positive component of health is wellness (we want to promote)

Physical Activity and Exercise Physical Activity- movement using large muscles of the body. Exercise- physical activity with the purpose of getting fit. Can be interchangeable but are important to your fitness, health, and wellness. Activities include: sports, dance, walking, running

Cycle of Physical Activity Benefits Health and Wellness Physical Fitness Physical Fitness leads to improved Health and Wellness which then makes you more likely to be Physically Active. A goal is for you to keep the cycle going throughout your life.

Looking Good / Feeling Good *Most people care about how they look and are most concerned with weight. *Regular Physical Activity, proper nutrition, good posture and good body mechanics; can help you look your best. *The more physically fit you are; the more you can resist fatigue. *Feeling good = sleeping better, doing better in school, and are less likely to be depressed.
