COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. In 1996, ECOSOC expanded the Commission’s mandate stating that the Commission should take a leading role in monitoring and reviewing progress and problems in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and in mainstreaming a gender perspective in UN activities. During the Commission’s annual two-week session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities gather at UN headquarters in New York. They discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the key global policy document on gender equality, the highlights which are not the SDGs. as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women. Member States agree on further actions to accelerate progress and promote women’s enjoyment of their rights in political, economic and social fields. The outcomes and recommendations of each session are forwarded to ECOSOC for follow-up.

CSW 61 The sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 to 24 March, 2017. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited NGOs from all regions of the world attended. The main focus was the Sustainable Development Goals, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The session also addressed opportunities and road blocks for economic empowerment of women in the changing world of work. The Commission adopted Agreed Conclusions. NGO participation and parallel sessions.

ZONTA INTERNATIONAL’S ROLE Of the more than 4,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with consultative status at the United Nations, only 146 have achieved General Consultative Status, the highest status an NGO can have at the UN. Zonta International was granted General Consultative Status in 1969. As an NGO with General Consultative Status, Zonta International is invited to participate in the annual Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Parallel events More than 60 Zontians attended CSW 61 Over 9,000 participants Over 1,500 NGOs 500 parallel events
