How the West was Fun As People begin to move west Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio become States Further West, Spain and France fought for the Louisiana Territory and Jefferson began to Fear what May Happen at the Port of New Orleans Spain would secretly trade the Louisiana Territory to France, ending their dealings with the United States

And THAT’S my final offer After gaining control of France, Napoleon looks to colonize the Louisiana Territory to build a NEW French Empire Napoleon would send troops from Haiti to the United States to fight, But The Haitian Slaves revolted and Overthrew French Power With Napoleon’s Dream of Colonization over, Jefferson offers to buy the Port of New Orleans from France Charles Talleyrand offered the ENTIRE Louisiana Territory to Jefferson instead

Deal of the Century Napoleon needed Money to Fight Great Britain and offered to sell the Louisiana Territory for 15 Million Dollars Napoleon Hoped that The United States would also Join in a fight against Great Britain Jefferson, who believed in a strict constitution could not turn down the territory and bought Louisiana Territory for 15 million dollars Senate would approve the Louisiana Purchase on October 20th, 1803 Doubling the size of the United States

The Real Gateway Arch Seeking to Learn about the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson Hired Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new land Lewis and Clark, with Clark’s Slave York, led the Corps of Discovery to Missouri to Begin their Expedition on the Missouri River in St. Louis The journey would take place mostly going upstream and the explorers would update their Journals every Night Insects, and fears about Native Americans, would lead to Many Sleepless nights for the Explorers

River of Dreams Lewis And Clark set out to explore the Missouri River to: Find a water route around the country Befriend Native Americans Describe Plants, Animals, and the Landscape The Journey started slowly but by October the expedition made it to North Dakota By October of 1804 they still had not had contact with any Native American Tribes

Hitch Hikers?? Pick Em’ Up As Lewis and Clark moved through Indian Territory He informed the Tribes their Land was now owned by the United States When Lewis and Clark left the territory and headed west, they would be joined by Sacagawea who would further help their journey She Would help them identify Food, Speak with Other Tribes and Gather Horses for the rest of their Journey

Off Roading When Lewis and Clark encountered the Great Falls of Missouri they had to set out on foot for 18 miles over a 2 week trek Lewis and Clark would soon encounter the Rocky Mountains and the Shoshone people In November of 1805 Lewis and Clark finished their journey reaching the Pacific ocean Though a water route to the Pacific was NOT found valuable Information would be brought to the US government

Turn Pike Zebulon Pike explored the Southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase and the Arkansas/Red Rivers Pike would follow the Arkansas River seeing the Rocky Mountains from 150 miles away Pike’s crew would follow he Arkansas river to the Rio Grande River into Spanish Territory and be arrested Pike’s Crew would also bring Back valuable information to the US including descriptions of the Great Plains and Rio Grande River Valley

Exploring a New World Lewis and Clark and Pike would bring back ACCURATE maps of the Louisiana Territory The Growth of Fur Trade brought more wealth and knowledge to the US Pike misreported the Great Plains as a desert which dissuaded people from settling there
