Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue CHAPTER 18 Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue—Code Range M00-M99 Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue are reported from Chapter 13 of ICD-10-CM. This chapter contains codes for diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissues. Injuries are classified to Chapter 19 of ICD-10-CM.

Arthropathies—M00-M25 This block of codes reports: Infectious arthropathies—M00-M02 Inflammatory polyarthropathies—M05-M14 Osteoarthritis—M15-M19 Other joint disorders—M20-M25 Site and laterality are identified in the codes.

Dentofacial Anomalies and Other Disorders of Jaw—M26-M27 This block of code also reports malocclusion. Disorders reported here include: Major anomalies of jaw size Anomalies of dental arch and tooth position Dentofacial functional abnormalities Developmental disorders of jaws Cysts of jaw Dental implant failures

Systemic Connective Tissue Disorders—M30-M36 This block of codes includes autoimmune disease, collagen disease, systemic autoimmune disease, and systemic collagen disease. This block of codes exclude autoimmune disease, single organ, or single cell-type. Coders should be guided by instructional notation that appears at the start of the block of codes.

Deforming Dorsopathies—M40-M43 The categories here include: M40—Kyphosis and lordosis M41—Scoliosis M42—Spinal osteochondrosis M43—Other deforming dorsopathies including spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, fusion of spine, and dislocations

Spondylopathies—M45-M49 These categories report: Ankylosing spondylitis Other inflammatory spondylopathies Spondylosis Spondylopathies, including spinal stenosis, kissing spine, stress fracture of vertebra

Other Dorsopathies—M50-M54 These categories report: Cervical disc disorders Thoracic, thoracolumbar, and lumbosacral intervertebral disc disorders Dorsalgia Radiculopathy Cervicalgia Sciatica, lumbago with sciatica, low back pain

Soft Tissue Disorders—M60-M79 This block reports: Disorders of muscles—M60-M63 Disorders of synovium and tendon—M65-M67 Other soft tissue disorders—M70-M79, including bursitis, bursopathies, myalgia, neuralgia, neuritis, and fibromyalgia

Disorders of Bone Density and Structure—M80-M85 This block reports: Osteoporosis with current pathological fracture Osteoporosis without current pathological fracture Adult osteomalacia Stress fracture Pathological fracture

Other Osteopathies—M86-M90 This block includes: Osteomyelitis Osteonecrosis Osteitis deformans—Paget’s disease of bone Other disorders including arrest of bone growth plate, hypertropyhy of bone, osteolysis Osteopathies in diseases classified elsewhere

Chondropathies—M91-M94 This block includes: Juvenile osteochondrosis of hip and pelvis Other juvenile osteochondrosis Other osteochondropathies Other disorders of cartilage

Remaining Categories M95—Other acquired deformities of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue M96—Intraoperative and postprocedural complications and disorders of the musculoskeletal system NEC M99—Biomechanical lesions NEC

Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporitng The Official Guidelines address: Site and laterality Acute traumatic versus chronic or recurrent musculoskeletal conditions Coding of pathologic fractures Osteoporosis

Coding Practice Select the code for the following: Pneumococcal arthritis of left shoulder

Coding Practice Solution Main term to reference in index: Arthritis Modifying term: Pneumococcal, then shoulder Code Assignment: M00.112
