Word Formation – Online and Slang Language Made by: Filip Risteski

Word shortenings and language economy Compounding – the process of combining two or more lexemes and forming new words. Clipping – the process of shortening a word without changing its meaning. Blending – the process of combining two or more words to create a new word.

Language economy. Necessity ? Writing messages or chatting on social media is part of our daily basis. We use them so much that we have already created our own online words and abbreviations. Have you ever been in a situation where you read a word online and your your reaction was

But does this creation of shortened words mean that we are being creative .. or just lazy? Can you name some ? We will look through some examples and explain their meaning.

MYOB = Mind Your Own Business NP = No Problem PLS = Please RU OK = Are You Okay? WILL SPK 2 U L8R = Will Speak To You Later TGIF = Thank God It’s Friday AFAIK = As Far As I Know M8 = Mate ASAP = As Soon As Possible B4 = Before BRB = Be Right Back F2F = Face To Face LMAO = Laughing My Ass Off

Slang A type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people. Can you name some slang words in Macedonian?

But have they just gone too far?

Fun facts:

2. DUDE (n.) it's an abbreviation of "Yankee doodle", and implied an over-fastidious, too-well-dressed young man – as in all the well-heeled US easterners who go on vacation on "dude ranches" in the west.

Do you have any questions?

Thanks for your attention.
