Artwork that portrays proportion

Proportion “Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.” (The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2011) Today we are going to be looking at proportion and we will be focusing on certain pieces of artwork in particular. Who can tell me what is the difference between drawing / painting a picture of yourself or one of another person. (Self-portrait / portrait). If I was to draw a picture of myself that is a self-portrait but if I was to draw a picture of you that is a portrait. “A self-portrait is a work of art that a person makes of him- or herself. Self-portraits allow people to decide how they want to be seen by others. Ask students how they think self-portraits can communicate something about a person's personality or interests (e.g., clothing, props, expression, pose, or a combination thereof).” (The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2011)

What do you think it means? (The Museum of Modern Art, 2014)

Pablo Picasso 1907 Self portrait How is this painting different from the others? Is it in proportion does it look like a real persons face. This is an abstract picture from the cubism era of art. In most self portraits the portrayal is true to life. (Pablo Picasso, 2009)

Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Humming-bird Frida Kahlo 1940 Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Humming-bird Oil on canvas 24 1/2 x 18 3/4 in Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Austin Artists may also put other items or symbols in their artwork that reflect their personality, culture or life. (Fridakahlo, 2014)

For our self portrait today we are looking at how things are in proportion. Looking at this girl holding her own self portrait – how are things in proportion? Explain facial proportions: - The eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin. - The bottom of the nose is halfway between the eyes and the chin. - The mouth is halfway between the nose and the chin. - The corners of the mouth line up with the centers of the eyes. (The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2011) (spittin-toad, 2011)

When completing self-portraits an easy way to draw your facial features in proportion is to follow these easy steps. Use the steps above to explain to students how to draw facial features in proportion. (Nicholson & Robins, n.d)

Today we will be completing our own self portrait. Use the steps above to explain to students how to draw facial features in proportion. (Nicholson & Robins, n.d)
