THE FIRST CIVILIZATIONS IN EVERY REGION OF THE GLOBE , ART AND ARTISTS HAVE FLOURISHED WITHIN POWERFUL EMPIRES AND GREAT CIVILIZATIONS. IN ERAS WHEN FEW PEOPLE COULD READ OR WRITE, ART CONVEYED VITAL MESSAGES ABOUT AUTHORITY AND STATUS. AT TIMES, THE PURPOSE OF ANCIENT ART, WAS TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THE REAL WORLD AND THE MAGICAL REALM OF THE SUPERNATURAL. ART GAVE VISUAL FORM TO GODS AND GODDESSES, ENABLING HUMANS TO FOCUS THEIR WORSHIP ON SPECIFIC IMAGES. ANCIENT ART ATTEMPTED TO SATISFY A TIMELESS HUMAN NEED- FOR VISUAL BEAUTY AND MAJESTY.

ANCIENT CHINA Ancient Egyptians were not the only people to believe that their rulers would come back to life in another world, where they would need followers, and enjoy their earthly possessions. Along the valley of the YELLOW RIVER a mighty civilization developed greatly concerned with the ceremonial burial of the dead The early dynasties buried living servants with their dead rulers. China is the site of one of the most remarkable tombs ever discovered

GREECE Greeks considered themselves civilized, and the rest of the world as barbaric. Developed a rich mythology based on tales about gods and goddesses. These gods lived on Mount Olympus but visited earth, interfering and interacting with mortals. These stories formed the basis of Greek literature and drama.

IDEAL BEAUTY- youth, strength, grace More lifelike, or naturalistic than previous cultures Greek sculptures and paintings were based on a study of the human body- especially the nude male athlete. Greeks exercised and competed naked Found nothing shocking about seeing people unclothed Nudity was associated with both heroism and divinity.

Winged Victory is an example of the later or Hellenistic Greek statues.

ROME Roman empire covered much of the world. Because of “Pax Romanus” (Roman peace) it was possible for Roman citizens to travel safely anywhere in the Roman empire. Because of this Roman art and architecture was highly influence by other civilizations, especially the Greeks.

LACOON is an example of Greek influence.

Roman’s however went beyond the Greek “post and lintel” and developed the rounded arch to create The Colosseum.

Roman’s also created paintings of stones called mosaics.

Interesting facts about the Colosseum: Held up to 50 thousand spectators! Almost 13 stories high! Opened in 80 AD, 1000’s did a mock battle. As many as 5000 animals might be slaughtered in a single day for sport. Animals could be raised by an elevator from the holding area below. Has Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns in the design. It still stands today.
