Interpreting Remainders Juzwiak

What Do I Do With What’s Left (The Remainder)? *Add 1 to the quotient. -In order to take care of all the parts of the problem, one must be added to the whole number quotient. * Use only the quotient. - Here you can ignore the remainder. -The problem does not make use of the remainder so simply use the quotient without it. * Use only the remainder. - The question asks what is left after something has been divided.

1.  If 13 parents want to go on the field trip and each car holds 6 people.  How many cars will they need? 3 cars; add 1 to the quotient.

2. There are 62 students in the Football League 2.  There are 62 students in the Football League.  How many teams of 6 can they make? 10 teams; the quotient is the answer.

3. A total of 58 awards will be given away to the soccer team 3.  A total of 58 awards will be given away to the soccer team.  Each box holds 8 awards.  How many awards will be in the partially filled box? 2 awards; The remainder is the answer.

You Try Solve the three problems on the back of your notes sheet on your own. Remember to show your work. Also, identify and label which of the three interpretations you used to help you solve the problem correctly. Hint: Each method of interpreting the remainder will only be used once
