REVIEW

REVIEW Bible Principle #1 - Context - knowing the circumstances that form the setting, events, statements, and ideas in order to understand how they should be understood and applied

REVIEW Three Types of Biblical Application: Historical, Doctrinal, Inspirational

Historical Application: Was this written to NT Christians like me? If not, who was this written to? What was the time frame and circumstances surrounding the record? How does this knowledge impact my perspective on the rest of scripture?

Doctrinal Application: Was this written to NT Christians like me? If yes, where else does God talk about this in the bible? How does this information affect my perspective of God, the church, his Word and my ministry? If this wasn’t written to NT Christians like me, who was it written and what are the truths that belong to that people group

Inspirational Application: Whether this was written to NT Christian like me or to another people group, what can I learn from it about the character of God? How does the content motivate you to be more consecrated? How does the content impact your personal calling?

As it concerns Romans 9 Historical: Romans 9 was written with the intent to better understand God’s plan for the Nation of Israel in light of Gentile salvation. Is Israel’s promise void? Is God unrighteous? Romans 9:14

As it concerns Romans 9 Doctrinal: The doctrines in Romans 9 apply to God’s perspective of Israel in the past and his election of nations and governments to execute his sovereign plan for the world.

As it concerns Romans 9 Inspirational: Romans 9 should inspire us to have God’s perspective of Israel, to pray for them in anticipation of their salvation. This should remind us of God’s loyalty to his children and ultimate plan for all mankind.

A Brief Summary of Calvinism Calvinism is the belief that before time began, God determined who would and would not be saved unto himself. (Unconditional Election) Implying the disturbing doctrine that while God says he loves all people he damns the majority of humanity to hell before they even take their first breath.

A Brief Summary of Calvinism Calvinism is the belief that humanity has no free will to choose Christ. Implying that we don’t actually choose anything, but God determines all things including human decisions. (total depravity) Further, if all things on earth are determined by God, then God will’s sin as well as salvation.

A Brief Summary of Calvinism Calvinism is the belief that Jesus Christ didn’t actually come for all of humanity but for the “elect” whom he chose before time. (Limited atonement) Implying that John 3:15-17 is a lie

Jhn 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Act 2:21 And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

1Jo 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

The History of God’s Plan for Israel Romans 9:6-13

Israel Born of Faith Rom 9:6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they [are] not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, [are they] all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

KEY POINT Whether Jew or Gentile, there is only one way to be a child of God, that is to be born again.

Israel Born of Faith 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, [are they] all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these [are] not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Israel Born of Faith Paul tells us that the promise of the nation was imputed to Abraham because of his faith. Heb 11:11-12

Israel Born of Faith Because of faith… Rom 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, [was] not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law [be] heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, [there is] no transgression. 16 Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

KEY POINT Being a child of promise requires being a Child of God first.

Israel Sustained by Promise Romans 9:9 For this [is] the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. 10 And not only [this]; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, [even] by our father Isaac; 11 (For [the children] being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12  It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

Israel Sustained by Promise Esau trades his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of chili. Gen 25:29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he [was] faint: 30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red [pottage]; for I [am] faint: therefore was his name called Edom. 31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32 And Esau said, Behold, I [am] at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? 33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised [his] birthright.

Israel Sustained by Promise Esau had the birthright but didn’t value it enough to keep it. In his desperation, he valued his own life greater than God’s Word.

KEY POINT Faith in God is always about man’s personal decision to submit to God’s word.

Israel Sustained by Promise Don’t get hung up… 11 (For [the children] being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12  It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

Israel Sustained by Promise Esau serving Jacob is not about salvation and it isn’t about predetermination, this is God’s prophetic word given in light of his foreknowledge.

Israel Sustained by Promise God tells Rebecca that Esau, the older, would serve the younger. Gen 25:23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations [are] in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and [the one] people shall be stronger than [the other] people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

Israel Sustained by Promise Esau never serves Jacob – but his ancestors the Edomites do, so this has to be a national context. Malachi 1:1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.  (2)  I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,  (3)  And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.  (4)  Whereas Edom saith…

Israel Sustained by Promise Even before they were born God made a selection concerning the nation based on his foreknowledge. And so he pronounced that the older would serve the younger.

Israel Sustained by Promise 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. When God declares his love for Jacob and his hatred for Esau he is differentiating between his position toward those who are within his blessing and his response to wickedness. Luke 14:26

Israel Sustained by Promise God loves humanity and desires to save them… John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  (17)  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
