How Ted Talks are impacting my life By Lauri Shoup, September 2016 I’m Leaving you for ted How Ted Talks are impacting my life By Lauri Shoup, September 2016

Who What is ted? TECHNOLOGY-Education-Design: “Ideas worth Spreading” TED is a nonpartisan nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 110 languages. Most talks are 4-18 minutes long I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ted (my husband knows this…)

I’ve seen some incredible things super hydrophobic molecules –mark Shaw’s Very Dry Presentation The discovery of DNA, aspirin, secret texts, 2,00o year old climates… Latif Nasser (Pain Medicine) New tests designed by CHILDREN to identify and treat cancers -- Jack Andraka Amazing (AMAZING) spoken word poetry --Shane Koyczan (Bullying) and Sarah Kay are awesome! Museums that break the boundaries of my definition of “museum” --Museum of 4 in the Morning, Jason Taylor (Underwater) Presentations that left me asking, “How did they do that?” -- marco Tempest is my favorite, Mick Mountz, (warehouses) , Sean Follmer (Shape-shifting Technology), Lots of motivational programs to inspire and encourage –Andrew Solomon , Ed Gavagan (knots & Surgeons), Ken Robinson (education) Other: beautiful, funny, captivating, marvelous mini movies –Julia Sweeney, Alexa meade, Gavin Pretor- Pinney, Jennifer Lee (Hunt for General tsao)

Sal Khan (of Khan Academy Fame) Let’s Teach for Mastery-not test scores November 2015 https://www.ted.com/talks/sal_khan_let_s_teach_for_maste ry_not_test_scores

EdWeek Market Brief Six Ways to use TED Talks Effectively in Your Classroom Through Video by Benjamin Levy, February 2015

6 ways to use ted talks in the classroom* Teach the value of a trait Classroom Inspiration Teach a Skill Demonstrate the value of a subject For Teachers: Professional development Teach a subject/Topic

PLayPosit /Educanon PlayPosit is an easy-to-use tool that lets teachers add interactivity to streaming video content from popular sites like YouTube, LearnZillion, TeacherTube, and Vimeo, among a number of others. Edcanon is a free service that is designed to help educators flip their classrooms by adding interactive questions to videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and Teacher Tube. It has a lot of potential to help teachers improve flipped lessons and it's incredibly easy to use.

EDWeek Market Brief 1-Value of a trait 2-Classroom inspiration 3-Teach a Skill 4-Demonstrate the value of a subject 5-For Teachers: Professional Development 6-Teach a subject/Topic IN watching the videos attached to each of these headlines, I was reminded about… the importance of developing deep meaning to enhance student learning and retention How capable children are when they aren’t treated like children How the potential for every child in any subject is closer to 100 % than we think How much our children need us to encourage and inspire them How much we need to be encouraged and inspired ourselves

What I hope You’ll Remember You are more powerful than you think (to impact a curriculum or to impact a child) Children are more capable than you (or they) imagine We spend a lot of time trying to build up students: don’t forget to take time to find ways to inspire yourself: look for something beautiful everyday Ted might be a valuable resource to engage and motivate you and your students
