Magazine Cover Analysis Ella Lavanya

Masthead – name of the magazine Masthead – name of the magazine. Is an identifiable and unique logo for the magazine. Mix mag relates to it being about a mixture of dance music and the clubbing scene, and DJs. The colour of it changes with each magazine cover, but the entire colour scheme matches each time. Here pink has been used as it’s the contrasting colour to Calvin’s yellow t-shirt. The font is quite neutral, not too harsh yet is bold and stands out. The most important information is in bold and or pink font. This makes it stand out on the white background. It having a three colour scheme is very simple, but effective because it means the cover isn’t over complicated and busy. This makes it more enticing to read, because you don’t have to invest a lot of effort. Small font, they know (think) they’re the best music DJ mag. Telling you they’re amazing and you should buy this magazine, they’re an authority on dance music and clubbing. Maybe even celebs read this mag? Secondary Cover lines: Freebees, stuff you can win highlighted with a black background, eye catching, another incentive to purchase the magazine. It markets thing the readers of this magazine will be interested in, DJ&Dance music, trips to the party island of Ibiza. Language used is quite playful, catchy. ‘Go ga-ga in Za Za land’, informal, youthful. Sub heading - Brief, doesn’t tell you exactly what it is. Catch lines spark interest, create ‘enigmas’. Alternating in colour, visually interesting, breaks up separate things so its easier to read. In lines so stands out on white background. All the writing on the cover is tilted slightly, this is visually dynamic and unusual. Edgy cover appeals to a younger audience, fits with the dance genre audience. Main image - of an artist, edgy, cool, shades, messy. Men may aspire to be cool like him. Dyers star theory – promotes this image, dance culture is cool and you should get involved… potentially drink&drug culture, partying. You can tell what kind of music he makes, what he’s like. Direct gaze but you cant see his eyes, he could be looking anywhere, closed off, mysterious? Who is this man? Reader want to find out, buy the magazine and read the article about him. Pull quote - Is he relatable? We are like him. Get to know what he’s really like. Amusing quote from article. Reader believe they’ll be interested in the rest of the article. CALVIN HARRIS is the second largest font on the page after the magazine title. Associations with youth, fun, dance music, pop/dance. Appeals to a younger audience because his music is quite ‘pop’y, mostly in the top charts, yet recently since the release of this his music has become more dance based. Multimedia, advertising themselves more extensively. ‘THE BEST’, exaggerative

Target audience The target audience of mix mag is a quite mixed. Most would think that dance music only appeals to a young audience (15-25), but it also reaches an older audience too, ‘old school ravers’. A lot of parents, 35-50 mostly, will have grown up and gone through a very independent part of their lives in the early 90s and 2000s. A lot of modern dance music also samples iconic music of the punk/dance era, so will be familiar to an older age bracket.
