The True Renaissance Astronomer Who is Copernicus The True Renaissance Astronomer

Nicolaus Copernicus Prussia (currently Poland) Renaissance-Period of Learning Astronomer – the branch of physics that studies celestial bodies and the universe as a whole(not to be confused with astrologer) Spoke Latin, German, Polish, Italian and Greek.

Copernicus was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, classical scholar, translator, artist, Catholic cleric, jurist, governor, military leader, diplomat and economist. Among his many responsibilities, astronomy figured as little more than an avocation (hobby)—yet it was in that field that he made his mark upon the world.

Astronomy First person to formulate a comprehensive Heliocentric Theory, which displaced the Earth from the center of the universe.

Heliocentric Cosmology

Unknown Astronomer Copernicus was the first scientist to create a complete model of the universe. Copernicus’s work prompted others to continue his idea after his work, but he did not get recognized for his work until after his death (1543) Brahe (Denmark) established the first observatories into space. Kepler (German mathematician) wanted to prove Copernicus wrong and did just the opposite by determining the size of some planets an that they orbited around the sun (oval not circle orbits) Tycho Brahe Johannes Kepler

Father of Astronomy Galileo Galilei Italian Astronomer who created the first telescope used strictly for astronomy, explained the universe as we know it today. His theories proved, without a doubt, that Copernicus was correct in his theory.

Led to Isaac Newton’s-Law of Gravity Vesalius and Harvey-Biology Antony van Leeuwenhoek-magnify lens(Micro-organaisms- bacteria, red blood cells and yeast). Robert Hooke-first microscope Robert Boyle-Father of Chemistry (atoms) Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier-Periodic table, Conservation of Mass (created nor destroyed)

Science versus Church These ideas created a huge disturbance between the church and the school. Galileo placed under house arrest by Pope Urban VII.
