Ross Little, De Montfort University PLA conference, 14 september 2017 Collaborare: “work together” Collaboration Ross Little, De Montfort University PLA conference, 14 september 2017 (Noun) The action of working with someone to produce something Traitorous co-operation with an enemy

overview WHY COLLABORATE? BENEFITS/CHALLENGES LEARNING FROM PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES LEARNING TOGETHER IMPROVING LANGUAGE, IMPROVING LIVES NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR YOUTH JUSTICE (NAYJ)

Collaboration (coates review) This culture of education should start from the very first day of a prisoner’s time inside. Every prisoner will be subject to rigorous assessment on reception. This will inform a Personal Learning Plan. Prison Governors will then be held to account for the progress of each prisoner in their jail against that Personal Learning Plan, over the whole duration of their sentence. This will mean that...prisons, education providers, health providers and probation services must all work together, sharing targets for employment and reoffending outcomes on release. Reducing re-offending ‘Productive discomfort’ Trust Prison vs Education Psychology

collaboration benefits Challenges EXTRA CAPACITY LEARNING FROM OTHERS (INTERDISCIPLINARY) LIBERATING; TO NOT PRETEND WE HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS REDUCES ISOLATION RESOURCES: FINANCE, IDEAS, PRACTICES STAFF CHANGES MAINTAINING FOCUS & MOTIVATION CAPACITY - COMMITTING TO SOMETHING YOU CAN’T DELIVER ‘GOING NATIVE’ UNEQUAL EFFORTS BEING/FEELING VALUED

Collaborative attitude WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? INDIVIDUALISED SOCIETY MASCULINITY WHO PAYS MY WAGES? WHO GETS THE CREDIT? BENEFITS NOT ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS GOODWILL IDENTIFYING GAPS TAKING RISKS PROBLEM SOLVING ‘DOING’ IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Collaboration in action LEARNING TOGETHER HMP LEICS/HMP GARTREE + DMU PRISON + UNI P/SHIP IMPROVING LANGUAGE, IMPROVING LIVES L&WI + BELL FOUNDATION + DE MONTFORT UNI (DMU)

PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS HONESTY KNOWING YOUR STRENGTHS (AND ‘AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT’) RECOGNISING STRENGTHS OF OTHERS BEING REALISTIC LISTENING LEARN FROM OTHERS RECOGNISING AND CELEBRATING THE GOOD WORK OF OTHERS

THE BEST COLLABORATORS UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY DO WELL (U.S.P?) FIND SOMEONE – OR AN ORGANISATION FOR WHOM THIS IS A NEED, A PRIORITY UNDERSTAND THIS IS ABOUT ‘CAPACITY’ AS WELL AS SKILLS TRUST OTHERS ARE…STRAIGHTFORWARD TO DEAL WITH RELIABLE, INDEPENDENT, SHARE RELEVANT INFO UNDERSTAND INTERSECTION BETWEEN ORGANISATIONS “NOT ME, BUT WE...” Prison safety and reform If we want to provide opportunities to reform and rehabilitate people then collaboration isn’t a nice to have, it’s a fundamental part of what prisons need to do.
