Project Overview An introduction to 3D printing Designing 3D printing parts Redesigning the Clawbot 3D printing new Claw components Assembling & Testing 3D printed components Open 3D printing design challenge

LESSON 04

Lesson 04 - Starter Learning objective: Develop final component parts for a modified VEX claw with new functions, 3D print new parts for build and testing, and evaluate unique new functional parts for their strengths and weaknesses. Consider…How are the 3D printed Claw parts different to the actual claw parts? The claw parts are… + - The 3D printed parts are… + - Key words: function, aesthetics, tolerance, design, build, finish, surface, quality, materials.

Introducing 3D Printing Build and test parts The 3D printed claw (using provided Autodesk Inventor parts) assembles perfectly using 4mm bolts and locking nuts. These are not standard VEX parts, so will need to be sourced from a mechanical part supplier or high-street DIY shop. The assembly shown uses an older 269 motor but a larger more powerful 393 motor works really well too. Up close you can see the bolts that hold the claw together.

Introducing 3D Printing Build and test parts To assemble the claw parts together is very easy. You will need to use a pair of pliers and an appropriate allen key or screw driver, at the same time. You are going to fit the claw together using 4mm bolts and matching locking nuts. Make sure: - you clear the hole with a hand drill and twist drill first - you fit the bolt and nut together straight - you do not over tighten the bolt and nut, as movement is important - you check the movement is smooth and not loose before moving on. Warning! Only operate the motor of the claw with a joystick once you have fully tested the movement by hand. See this short video to show what it should look like and sound like.

Introducing 3D Printing 3D print your own finger designs and fit Having assembled your own 3D printed claw replica, you can now print out the finger parts you designed earlier, and build these onto your claw and test out how well they function. Task: Assemble and test out your modified claw on your clawbot robot and assess how well it functions.

Lesson 04 - Plenary As a class, let us consider the following questions? A. What makes 3D printing such a great process for making functional prototypes? B. How could the ability to improve the resolution of 3D printing be beneficial to designers? C. What would be the issue if tolerance of printed parts was too varied from the CAD file? D. How would you propose to use 3D printing in the future for your own needs?

Summary Today you have: Learning objective: Develop final component parts for a modified VEX claw with new functions, 3D print new parts for build and testing, and evaluate unique new functional parts for their strengths and weaknesses. Today you have: Learnt how to develop ideas from simple into final parts with a functional focus Manufactured parts for building and testing Justified the strengths and weaknesses of new component parts
